I love the silence at the end of Dog Years.

It's kinda like the period at the end of your post.

I love it when the synth starts kicking in in Middletown Dreams, right after "brilliant shooting star"  Give me goosebumps every time

Second that totally!

I also like the start of The Weapon...something about that works for me!

Did you ever notice that sound effect right before the synth?

There are so many nuances that I can gush over...

Bastille Day - the small guitar wail at 2:50

Freewill - pretty much the entire bass part at 3:03

Limelight - "the note" at 3:13... it sounds like the guitar is weeping

The Camera Eye - When Geddy goes deep at 9:46

Vital Signs - Neil's double bass drum hits at 4:12

Red Sector A - Alex's beautiful guitar lick at 3:35

The Enemy Within - Geddy's funky pops at 3:33

Red Lenses - when the bass synth goes really deep at 3:08, followed by Geddy's popping (I think a funky bass solo should've gone here over that great drum riff)

The Big Money - the arpeggiated synth sound at 3:08 and 3:17

Middletown Dreams - Alex's machine-gun strumming at 2:19

Force Ten - the little synth "burp" at 4:00

The Main Monkey Business - that deep drum hit at 1:19

MalNar - the bass slide at the very end of the song

Oh man this is an awesome thread! I'm gonna come back and add to it. I'll be sitting here all day.

What I will say though:

Natural Science: Just as Alex starts playing the clean arpeggio before drums and bass come in, you hear the seagulls in the background start to get more chaotic as they add reverb and delay to it. It starts at around 1:47.

That is one of the coolest f***ing effects I've ever heard on any recording!

I believe he likes the way the drums were recorded/produced. Hence, he likes how they sound.

Man I'm glad we have you around to answer rhetorical questions and post the blazingly obvious. Thanks! cool.gif

I can't believe what you mentioned about Bastille Day. It's that quick guitar lead ending with the rhythm chord that's always been my favorite part of the song.

That's what this thread is about. It's about subtle sounds, nuances, hidden sound effects, or other instrumental 'events' that occur within the songs that may escape the casual ear. Getting specific to minutes and seconds is always appreciated so we can listen to what's described for ourselves.

Ahh live versions of Bastille Day drive me crazy because Alex doesn't play that one lick!

Hey, here's a good site for all this kind of stuff:

http://musicintheabstract.org/#extracted%20hidden%20audio

And, by the way, that "Subdivisions" voice in Subdivisions is awesome, too!

Dude, thanks. MITA's site is well known around here. So it MITA. smile.gif

I would go with the guitar sounds on 2112, the bluesy leads, esp. the one in Passage to Bangkok. It always sounded like a late at night sound. Conjures images of a cold, dark winter night's skyline for some reason. Also love the watery sort of sound of guitars on analog kid. Spirit of Radio chording on Permanent waves has a cool guitar sound. Distorted but open and airy in some way. Very very nice. Moving pictures has a great sound, very vivid and clear. word that comes to mind is cinematic.

There are too many, but if I have to single one out it's Geddy's "ohhh!" in Witch Hunt - sends shivers down my spine in more ways than one.

It's either just after "confident their ways are best" or just after "save us from ourselves" - can't remember. The CD is in the car and it's cold out there. biggrin.gif

Hey all! First of all, I just registered myself here, and I'm very excited to post my first message on this forum and on any Rush forum ever.

OK, now, some of the sounds I love...

2112 Grand Finale - There're some incredible guitars over the rhythm at the beginning, they sound like feedback or harmonics, can anyone tell? They sound like ghosts flying, love them!

Best I can. Before and after the guitar solo, Alex makes some slide thing, I don't know if its a slide or a pick, but I love it.

Different strings. The bass harmonics (it's bass, isn't it?), and the sound of the hi-hat and the ghostly lead guitar before the "What happened to our innocence..."

What a great topic! I have a lot to post on this...
