work sucks............ going for a mtn bike ride.  1022.gif

get that bike dirty. wink.gif

funny you should mention that, today was a muddy day indeed. some of the steeper sections over clay were quite slick. mud all over me and the bike. thankfully no wet rock/root induced falls though. think i will do it again tomorrow!

Got my new Dura-Ace 7900 Compact Crankset today - it's amazing that even though your spinning an easier gear and higher cadence with this thing your average speed stays about the same - This will make climbing the sierras a joy and not a personal hell -

Okay, biking folks.

I'm now confined exclusively to biking on the indoor trainer in a SEATED position only to minimize wear on the artificial hip (until I get minor surgery to replace a small plastic liner part - then it's all systems go).

That's fine, but, oh, my aching ass! And other, ahem, parts as well. It makes a HUGE difference to be able to stand on the pedals for a few. Right now all I can handle is about an hour and a half at one go. Then it's just too damn painful. Yes, I do have the gel seat AND the padded beaver-reliever shorts, but still. . .

Any tricks? I can go as long and hard as I want on the bike, just no outdoors (too much bumping around) and no standing in the pedals. I've been getting off after the first hour and walking round for 10 minutes or so to ease things, and it does help.

i like the shorts description! rofl3.gif

The only thing I can think of that might help is to make sure your seat height is set at level comfortable for you. you probably know this but if not the correct height of the seat should allow you leg to extend fully. if the seat is too high or low it puts more pressure on the region in question.

good luck with the rehab!

I didn't know there was a bikini biking thread here. I guess I'm not the only peep to misread that. smile.gif

I did a lot of biking as a kid/teenager, but lost sight of it when I turned 18 and started working.

I got back into it in my early 20s out of financial necessity to get out of debt, but it also got me back into great shape.

I was off the bike for about 10 years until a few years ago when I walked off a soul-destroying job ("Employment-at-will" cuts both ways smile.gif ), turned my time off into a 6 month sabbatical, bought a Cannondale, and put in over 3000 miles in 6 months. I lost a ton of weight, and ppl were surprised to see me 6 months later (I went back to the old job after a buyout / management change), as I had lost 8 inches, 40 pounds, and 5 years.

Unfortunately I've put that weight back on (particularly during the winters) but I try to put on as many miles as I can in the spring/summer/fall. Last year my part of New England had a lot of poor weather and cold temps during biking season, but I have high hopes for this year, as temperatures tend to average out over time. We've already had more nice days in March this year than I can remember in the last few years. I've only been out twice this year, but I'm hoping to make it out Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, before the temps head back into the 30-40F range.

If I can work up the conditioning for it, and find 2 hours of time for it (my commute would go from an hour to 3 hours a day) I'd like to dump my car and use my bike for the daily commute (48 miles round trip by bike, 52 by car). If I could do that 3 times a week, I could probably get back to the shape I was in in my 20s. The ride in at 4:30a-6:00a would be tough (I should probably buy bear spray as a precaution) but the ride home from 2:30p-4:00p would be nice.

I don't have a pic of my own bike, but this is the bike I bought in 2006: http://www.cannondale.com/gbr/eng/Products...2044-6RR7D-R700

thats a nice looking cannondale. I have rode a few cannondale mtn bikes but have never owned one. This warm weather has me itching to go biking but i hear all the trails are covered trees from the winter storms. I may have to volunteer and go out and help clear them.

I think that is definitely going to happen this summer. The only thing is I really hate biking in this city. Everyone I know who bikes has gotten hit by at least 1 car or has got their bike stolen at least once. The motorists here are insane, you have to be a road warrior to deal with biking in the street. My neighbourhood kinda sucks because of all the buildings there aren't many bike trails around here. I have to drive to a place with bike paths so I can ride my bike safely. wacko.gif
