I get that they have to pick a title, and it's not bad at all, but wasn't he somewhat a disciple of Freddie Gruber?  Or is that a stretch?

I'd say "student" is a better word.

Wow, based on the trailer this looks to be better than expected.  The footage with the other drummers they bring in to play with Alex and Geddy looks very cool, not to mention the selection of drummers.

Good point.  I can see that.  I'll admit I was playing semantics a bit there with the disciple thing.   The director's meaning of "no one's disciple" being Neil chose his own path.

Neil and the band were hounded for years because of their interest in some of Ayn Rand’s writings and ideas.  If I remember correctly, the “no one’s disciple” comment was Neil’s direct rebuttal of those who saw him as a devout follower of Rand.  Neil liked some of Rand’s ideas, but not all of them.

I always think of this sort of cavalcade of guest drummers playing Neil's parts as a novelty- and not of the best sort. Of course Neil was/is a huge influence on lots of other drummers who 'made it'- maybe it's just me, I don't know, but I get pretty defensive about Rush music played with a host of 'guest drummers'.

 

That being said, yes I know, I know- what about Annika?? I get it. But the thing is, when Geddy and Alex decided they wanted to audition her, she really didn't know their music much at all. And I really like that!

Right?  IM pretty excited about that.

 

I dont want to be a nit picker, but see how he said he wants to play it just like Neil.  This was my small nitpick with Annika because (just my taste) because there were plenty of times the "corners were rounded off" of what Neil played, and I really noticed that.  Her drumming is great!  But.. with Rush the drums are another instrument, not simply an accompaniment.

After reading all of his books and being so into the band, I'm hoping there's some new perspectives or information.  Neil was such an interesting soul.

Unfortunately CBC will be releasing this doc on YouTube only in Canada shortly after being released to CBC Gem, so I have a plan to go on the Rush subreddit, here, and a Rush community on Tumblr and ask anybody on these three platforms if they're Canadian, and if so, can they give me the link to the documentary, and then I will go onto a YouTube video downloader site that I use often and download it before uploading it to the Internet Archive. Convoluted plan? Kinda, but I want everyone who can to see it.

If it's on Canadian YouTube a VPN will be all you'd need.

Hearing the brief clip of Carey playing Tom Sawyer was interesting. He is a no doubt a world class drummer, and for many years and many fans he seemed to be the "de facto" guy to sit on the throne should Rush ever decide to tour again. And yet, when I hear him play Rush, I just don't feel it.

 

I am looking forward to hearing the full New World Man with Stewart Copeland - contender for my favourite drummer of all time (after Neil, as he often joked).

I love DC but you’re right. He kinda lumbers when he’s in unfamiliar territory.

Before I discovered Rush and Neil, Stewart was my go-to drummer when I was taking up drums late 1970's. So I loved his joke about Neil.

 

Imagine him taking a stab at Digital Man too which is full of ska and a Stewart--style influenced drumming!
