I've been re-reading through Neil's "News, Weather, & Sports Archive on Cygnus-X1.net, and the end of the Dec. 2007 entry really struck me tonight:

 

Of course it’s just my opinion, but to me, my life is not dedicated to the place, but to the journey, and to the hour of arriving.

 

All the while knowing that, all too soon, there will come the hour of departing.

 

It's been a wide range of emotions reading through these again with all of the years of history since he penned these on a fairly regular basis for that 10-year stretch. It's quite a ride down memory lane.

Yeah, that line hits a lot harder now. Neil had that rare way of making a travel note or tour update suddenly turn into something much bigger, without sounding like he was trying to be profound.

 

Re-reading those entries really does feel different with hindsight. At the time they were just these wonderful dispatches from the road, but now they read almost like a long, thoughtful diary of motion, work, solitude, curiosity, and impermanence. Cygnus-X1 preserving all of that is a real gift.
