Would you go to see Rush if the band were playing instrumental music?

Just for the fun of it, if, for example Geddy was not ready to sing, and the band got pressure to play from management. At the same price, maybe not, but forget the price of tickets. Or how much money would you spend to see Rush playing without any singing?

Yeah, because I've been watching bands who play only instrumentals, and listen to a lot of those kinds of albums. So it's an everyday thing for me.

That's not answering the question though is it. Say they went on a tour doing purely instrumental music, would you go? Would you buy a RUSH album of all instrumentals?

I would go.  I’d go to pretty much anything that involved being  able to watch Geddy play bass.

Same. I would actually love to see a performance where he is able to focus solely on bass. Although, I would think of that more as a master class than a normal concert.

 

Can't imagine too many in the general public would be interested in an only instrumental performance.

I would go and pay full price, with the following conditions...

 

• The same or better set list
• Require a 10% discount for any instrumental with the word "Thing" in the title
• Require a 5% discount for any instrumental after YYZ
• 10% extra for Under the Shadow 
• Require a 20% discount for Anagram being the only encore song

I would not go at any price if the set list was the one from the S&A tour.

 

I would buy an album of instrumentals of the quality of YYZ and La Villa, or a medley like that the beginning of R30 but not one where the quality of instrumentals was similar to that of the later catalog.

The question and my response is relevant due to the recent issues with Geddy's voice; he better heal up or they very well may need to consider another singer. I'm not a big vocalist fan, but unless you're the Dixie Dregs, all instrumentals eventually get dull.

I'd go. Absolutely!! They are a predominantly instrumental band.

It would come down to where and how much.  But I'd be welling to see them for sure if they were close and the prices weren't too bad.  Thankfully where I am going in Novemeber, I was able to get fairly inexpensive tickets, and I'm only having to drive about three and half hours away.

I might if the instrumentals were interesting enough. If they were just doing vocal-less versions of songs that had vocals, that might be fairly boring. A deliberate all-instrumental album from Rush could be a pretty cool thing, but the instrumentals would need to take me on a journey, like La Villa.

I truly did. Until the Juno awards a couple months back, the last time I saw Geddy and Alex in person was sitting in some chairs having a chat!

I want them to play the ENTIRE Caress of Steel album live. I especially want to hear them play The Necromancer, and Didacts and Narpets, with Anika!!!

This all makes me think about the whole production that Rush shows have been for the past 20+ years or so. Of course their live shows have long been made for a large arena-type setting. I've often thought about what it would be like to see them in much smaller theatres, like 2000-3000 capacity. No need for the film stuff or a lot of the visuals- really pare it down, you know? But the music itself would still be larger than life. 

 

Yeah, sure I'd still go see them if they were just sitting around and telling stories. Sitting on stools with a 50-watt amp each, you know, whatever.

I've always wondered about seeing them in small venues as well, especially since learning about the surprise show they did back in '96 or '97. I think that venue was just a few hundred people, but no one knew who was performing until they came out on stage.

 

I guess the closest thing to that would be the recent Juno performance.

All Joking aside, I really wouldn't be apposed to them having a tour where they performed most of it but had long sections of story telling, maybe even talking about events that aren't included in "My Effin' Life".  I really enjoy interviews and seeing the verbal interaction between the band mates.  On that note, I kinda wish there were more videos of current interviews with both Anika and Loren.  I'd love to hear more of the story about how things when as the begin working with Rush.
