New reissues of Rush's Mercury Records catalog coming from Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab

All albums from the self-titled debut through Power Windows are coming on LP and hybrid SACD from MoFi. (Not sure why they left out HYF.) The debut, FBN and AFTK are available to preorder now.

Their ranking of the albums is a great example of how subjective music is. According to them Hold Your Fire isn't as bad as Test For Echo or Snakes and Arrows.

Me too, it's a good album, I don't get the hate. And the production is light years better than the three most recent albums.

Where do you rank Hold Your Fire?

 

I've got it just inside the RUSH top 10, at #10, just above Clockwork Angels, Vapor Trails, Counterparts and Grace Under Pressure. Then comes Roll the Bones and , followed by T4E, Arrows and Presto.

It's a testament to Rush's consistency (and people's varying tastes) that their album rankings are so varied. I've seen every Rush album be referred to as someone's favorite and that says something. I'm terrible at ranking things but I do like/love every Rush album so there's that.

Number one with a bullet!  I kid. I haven't really taken the time to fully flesh out anything except my top 3 (Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and Grace Under Pressure), and even those can vary based on my mood. I don't dislike any of their albums and all have some good songs on them but some have a clunker or two also.

The answer is both!

 

I think the vinyl will certainly be more pricey. But just think how proud you'll be with that gold and black MFSL imagery around the Rush album art, on both vinyl AND compact disc.

This persons rankings blow chunks....not a diehard Rush fan....it's an outsider looking in.

Curious if you're playing both formats with other music? I can't help but remind listeners that the formats - vinyl weight, stylus design, CD sample rate, whether headphones closed or open, listening room reflection - has so much to do with the listening pleasure of a recording. It's actually on SACD, not the traditional CD.

I generally prefer vinyl; it hits my ears differently and always has (psychoacoustics? analog warmth? IDK!) when played side by side with digital formats. I decided to purchase the FBN and AFTK on vinyl for this reason. I have a CD player in my car, but am not sure that the fidelity matters as much in that listening environment.
