HemiBeers Posted June 8 Posted June 8 I'm kind of glad they didn't have her do a drum solo. That time has come and gone. Give Neil's solos their due, but I'd rather hear another song. When you consider they axed any drum solo, the show was close to 2:45. Playing Xanadu and La Villa is close enough to a drum solo. 5

Looked like he was just standing around vibing a lot. Not a knock on him, but I guess I thought Ged was going to get out from behind the keyboards mostly. He added some cool swirly textures in the last section of 2112 that I thought fit the vibe of the song nicely. 2

It's not so much what he adds, it's that he takes some of the keyboard work off of Geddy's shoulders. They should have done a touring keyboardist ages ago. No one goes to Rush shows to see Geddy plunk away at a keyboard. 3

Yeah, she didn't hit every note Neil hit, YEAH, she missed a few things and worked it out, but the fact that she got through a three hour Rush show with the setlist that they played is TOTALLY impressive! Like I said on the YouTube feed, She didn't hit ALL of the notes, but she hit the ones that counted! DAMN she plays!!!! She'll only get better (Could you imagine playing this show!) And once she settles in things will be amazing-er! 3

I like seeing Geddy juggle multiple instruments because not many can do it on his level. But at this point in his career he's more than happy to defer some of the keyboard responsibility to someone else. He's certainly earned it. Loren even did the glockensoeil parts in Xanadu, relieving Anika from the task of learning a new instrument. 4

One of the side-stage videos shows that neither Geddy or Alex have Taurus pedals by their front facing microphones now. Only Geddy has a set by his keyboard setup. The pedals really acted like an invisible "fourth member" of the band, especially from the synth era onward. I agree though. Geddy really did seem to play a lot more keyboards last night than I thought he would. With the exception of YYZ, he played keys on pretty much every song that required them with Red Sector A not having any bass whatsoever, like usual times.

Except if you're a fan of the synth era where seeing him multi-task on different instruments while singing at the same time is genuinely mind blowing. 1
James Bond Posted June 9 Posted June 9 Limelight is a good song on a basic level that exemplifies what Loren is doing for Geddy. During the solo, Geddy is able to go rock out in the middle of the stage while the synth pads come in. Same with the epic synth chords during the final choruses. Those are done by Loren now. Geddy used to either trigger or play that stuff with his feet which confined him to one spot. Now he's free to move about. As far as some of the pre-recorded sampling goes, Alex used to trigger the "Subdivisions" voice sample but that is now also done by Loren. Sometimes Alex would mistime it a little bit, but Loren nailed the sample every time considering it's the only thing he has to do at that point. Loren also took over some of the electronic percussion parts and sampling. He's there to make things easier on Geddy and Alex. It was cool to hear the honky tonk piano at the end of The Spirit of Radio done for real as it were. He clearly had fun with it with the extra piano slides. I noticed some fun little additions to other songs as well. When he isn't playing, he's sitting there like a kid in a candy store with a smile on, hyping himself and the crowd. He's got the best view in the house to watch Geddy and Alex do what we love. 7

I think his duplicating Alex's "Strangiato theme" guitar line helps thicken that part and gives Alex a little bit of cover in case he flubs notes. 2

Hopefully that was just opening night nervousness (with a new drummer, no less) and that he'll get back to being his regular goofy, entertaining self. 2

I have the same question too; it does look like Anika playing the girl; it does seem like Alex playing the fat boy, tall boy. I could never be mistaken for Loren, but yeah, good observation! I haven't seen anyone mention his back up vocals - I think he did a lot of singing, which also fattened things out.

I didn't really "get" the three random people searching for Rush thing. If they were 3 characters that related to their history or something, it would make sense. It just seemed so random to me. Maybe I'm missing something. I kept being worried that there was gonna be some joke about the short, grey haired older person looking gender non-specific (which they kinda look like to me). So I didn't really love the intro that much - I find the Paul Rudd Jason Seagal thing really unfunny, but a lot of people seem to like it. I did LOVE the discovery of the kimonos and what that set off. That was super cool. 1
