James Bond Posted April 17 Posted April 17 Geddy has really settled on the greenish hues as his colour of choice in recent years. Very cool bass! 2

Yeah, he seems to have retired the black 72 Jazz (Number 1) in favor of the sea foam green (62?). I see green!! It's so obscene I'm not really sure what it means See green green I'm thinking about the overarching theme couldn't we talk about something less obscene? Edited April 17 by grep 4

1-0-0-1-0-0-1 Posted April 18 Posted April 18 (edited) Love the body color, hate the pickguard. IMO the gold color doesn't go well with the turquoise blue, and the size and shape of it covers too much of the body. Edited April 19 by 1-0-0-1-0-0-1 Added photo 4

For someone who doesn't use a pick...ever...it's surprising that Geddy would have any pickguard. In fact, sans pickguard would make it more unique for a ricky.
HemiBeers Posted April 19 Author Posted April 19 Here's a webpage with the history of ricky colors. That turquoise/gold combo goes back to the mid fifties (you see it as option 4 on the page). That turquoise does remind me of a mid 50s chevy. https://www.rickenbacker101.com/p/factory-colors The 31 Trans Green is stunning and a more modern look without pick-guard. That would be my pick if I had unlimited budget and a green fetish. 2

In fact, sans pickguard would make it more unique for a ricky. On an electric instrument,, the pickguard isn't only about protecting the body from pick scratches. It's also a way to mount the electronics. On a Les Paul or Paul Reed Smith, there's a separate thin piece of wood that gets glued onto the top of the body, and before they do that they rout channels into the body for running wires for the pickups. The top wood, once glued on, would then hide those channels. There's also a small cavity on the back for the control knobs, and a plastic cover goes over that. On a normal Strat or Teie, all of the wiring cavities are routed into the top of the body, but instead of covering those with a piece of wood, they use a large piece of plastic, and all of the electronics are mounted directly to that. That plastic also doubles as a pickguard, but it's less about pick scratches and more about making it easy to mount and access the pickups and controls and wiring. That pickguard also becomes part of the overall aesthetic. The shapes of Strat and Tele pickguards are part of the distinctive look of those guitars, and it's the same for the Ricky bass. The pickguard on Geddy's new bass is a big departure from the normal Ricky -- it covers much more of the body than the normal one. I'm not a fan. I wouldn't mind the gold on turquoise colorway if they had stuck with the traditional pickguard. To make a Ricky without a pickguard, they would have to redesign how the body is made in order to accommodate the electronics.
edhunter Posted April 19 Posted April 19 This is his hold my beer moment to counter Neil’s ugly pink kit from HYF. 1
BlairC45 Posted April 20 Posted April 20 Looks cool - If that's what Geddy wants, that's good enough for me!
toymaker Posted April 21 Posted April 21 Is that the "horseshoe" bridge pickup? Not just a pickup cover that he'd likely just remove? I'm not a fan of that older pickguard style either - I think it's from the 60s models - Lee has photos of them in his book.

WonderDude Posted Tuesday at 01:12 PM Posted Tuesday at 01:12 PM That pickguard is anodized aluminum isn't it? I wonder if they put that giant thing on there to help eliminate noise.
