This might be a long shot, but I'm really hoping he brings out the Wal MK-1 for a few songs during this new tour. Even if it's just for a song like Force Ten or Roll the Bones. I wish he did that for R40 rather than play that silver Les Paul bass for the few synth era songs they did on that tour. I wouldn't even mind if he added some distortion to the Wal to make it sound more like Justin Chancellor or Tomas Obeast Koefoed's bass tone.

Not to entirely dismiss your comparison between Ged’s & Chancellor’s Wal tones, but the reason the latter’s sounds the way it does has more to do what other gear he uses on top of the Wal: a trio of Galien Krueger 2001RB heads, a pair of Mesa cabs (an 8x10 & a 4x12) & his eleventysix stomp pedals he’s got. All of that together  colors his tone. Also the fact he plays with a pick.

By comparison, Ged in recent years has mostly been using rackmounts & getting the sound through the PA instead of using actual bass heads & cabs (save for that brief moment during Time Machine/CA era when he used Orange heads) & no pedals. I think if he brought out his Wal & is still using his signature Tech21 rack mount with the deep channel cranked up & turn up the midrange & drive by a bit, I would guesstimate that he could likely get pretty close to a heavier/beefier tone on the Wal…not like Chancellor’s, but less thin sounding than on HYF.

I'd like to see Ged bring back the Steinberger. Funny lookin' bass, but it had a good punchy tone.

Didn't he also have a red Wal bass at one point too?

I gotta be honest. I gotta have more cowbell!

Ye, I was bawling like a 6 year old girl with a skinned knee. Interesting to pick a first album song. Nice. I wonder if they threw a picture of John onscreen for a brief second behind them.

For a moment, I wondered if they'd go into the R30 Medley. Then my adventurous mind thought they'd do a complete discography, since they started with first song, first LP. Ha! I didn't do the math, but right about now, they might be up to say, "Roll the Bones".

Anika sounded great. Alex sounded awesome. Geddy was as good as could be expected. I understood why they put keyboard guy up there. They'd already announced they would hire a "keyboard guy" (which is his official name from now on, for me), so they respected him in the classy way of everything they do.

BTW, I read youtube comments online to get my fill of joy, (a sentence I never imagined I'd read, or type) before I ventured over here to get a dose of reality, and all the ways in which pure joy could be nitpicked to death. In the words of Billy Joel: "Leave a tender moment alone".

Nah. Just kidding.

Some doofus posted on Facebook that she doesn't have the "swing" that Neil had and it wasn't that good. Thinking with his heart instead of his head.

FFS, NO ONE has Neil's swing.  I guess some people out there just live to complain...

Nice to see Ged and Al acting like teenagers at the Coff-In again...

I dont know theyve played in front of folks so calm and reserved before lol.

This video from the Laura Secord Secondary School concert shows all the polite Canadian kids sitting while they get their faces blown off.  Check audience reaction at 3:20.

Haha - I love Neil...but "swing" is not something his playing is noted for.

I found that the drums didn't sound as good as with Neil Peart's kit

To each their own ears, I suppose.  Her snare drum alone was better sounding to me than any snare he played since moving to DW back in '95 or so, with maybe the exception of the first DW with the red sparkle kit.  And her secondary snare was fire as well - not some novelty piccolo thing but an actual usable variation.  Her toms also sounded more aligned with his Tama sound (which makes sense) and less like his more recent "boingy" DWs (which I think had more to do with his head choice than the drums themselves, because obviously DW makes good drums...)

I adored the tuning on her toms and that came across in person as well. The big rolls sounded very classic Rush to my ears.

I had the impression that his snare drum was too loud, which disturbed me, but the toms were ok.

Well, she is prettier than Neil, but that's about it.

Was it really necessary to come in here to post this?

Ignore it.... let them be miserable. It's on them, not us.

Performance was magical. Looks like they are rested, re-energised and sounding bloody great. Please no more comparisons and enjoy the now which maybe the last tour of the world’s finest rock band.

I could have sworn I've heard Bob say that he used a Gibson EB-3 to record Blizzard

Yes, you are correct.  I don't know where I heard that about the Zamatis.... but that was obv wrong.

Good callout.

I think most of my additional optimism about the tour, that comes from seeing this Juno performance, springs from the simple logic that if they did this well, with this song, how much easier is it going to be to play songs like Dreamline, Red Sector A, Far Cry…so many songs that are much better suited to Geddy’s current vocal range.
I mean, going all the way back to the first album and, objectively, just crushing one of their high-key, Zeppelin-esque bangers as faithfully as they did probably represents the zenith of “degree of difficulty” they’ll face on this tour.
Part of me wonders if the song choice didn’t contain a little element of, “We’ve heard some tut-tutting out there about, ‘Will they still be able to cut it’. Well, here—hold our f***ing beer, and watch this.”

Geddy's voice was a bit ropey but to be expected with quite a challenging choice of song but overall a pretty damn good performance.

I see the'e already a couple of snipes at Anika ..... crikey, give the girl a chance!!!

Maybe they picked that song first because it's a Rutsey song and they can ease her in before getting her into the Neil stuff.

I’ll admit to wondering that too, but frankly I think the whole thing about tiptoeing around “Neil’s ghost” at every turn is being overblown.
I bet 99% of the hand-wringing “but, Neil” stuff comes from the fan base, with the remainder coming from the band.

Anika did great but I've never doubted that at all. Geddy and Alex looked so happy to be back playing together. Vocally Geddy did fine. Very bold choice to go with a song that high for their first performance with this lineup but he sounded better than he sounded on the early 70s stuff on R40.

A lot of big names were using Steinbergers in the mid-80s...

Just like how mullets are making a comeback, I can't tell you how many modern metal guitarists are starting to play Kiesel and Strandberg headless guitars now. Hell even Ibanez is making a new headless guitar that almost looks like the old Steinberger M model that was discontinued years ago.

It's just a trend.
