A Terry Brown remix has got me pretty excited for this box set.

As we all know, he was fired after he produced the album before this one: Signals.

Fascinating what he might do here. He hated keyboard Rush - so, does he do some drastic things here? I hope so!

-

What do you enhance?

What do you push more to the background?

So you remove any fades?

Maybe change the order of the songs?

Is the snare crispy and present enough?

Would you add more low end? Make the bass more toppy?

What are some things you don’t want done?

I love the mixing on GUP tbh...

Hold Your Fire, Presto and Roll the Bones could use some remixing tho

I bet that just like VTOI back in 2013, we are going to hear some alternate takes.

In terms of how Broon is going to mix - I have no idea but I'm here for it.

I would leave GUP and PW alone. What I want to know is: what happened to the supposed Signals remix that Broon has stored in his liquor cabinet?? That's one album that needs a slight boost in guitar, at least.

He would likely fix HYF and Presto too.

He'd be able to rectify HYF and PRE only if there is something resembling bottom end on the masters.

Gandalf The Wizard couldn't fix Presto.

I would try my best to use EQ to warm up the bass.  For me the bass tone on Signals is PERFECT.  I understand that he was using the Steinberger on GUP so it is vastly different than the Rickenbacker...but I would attempt to put it more into that world.

I think the drums could also be warmed up a bit.  Again, I think my fave drum sound he got on record was on Signals, so I would use that as the benchmark.

I would leave the guitars alone - I think the slightly cold, brittle nature of them is perfect for the songs.  I feel the same about the synths.

I also think that Signals is Geddy's best vocal performance and vocal sound...so if there was a way to try and match that EQ, I'd be all for that.

And lastly, I would re-order the 2nd side to be:

Red Lenses

Body Electric

Kid Gloves

Between the Wheels

I think the vocal only into of Red Lenses would be a cool and dramatic way to start side 2.  In fact, I think the small handful of moments that Rush used the "band dropping out vocal only" move are really effective (Stick It Out, The Pass, Available Light...) , and I might look for moments on this record to do that in some other places.  I'd have to think about that for a while...but for instance after the intro of Afterimage, having the band drop out for "Suddenly you were" and then kick in with "gone" could be cool...

Gandalf the White... possibly.

Gandalf the Grey...nah.

Sauron... he'd make it sound like Presto.

I'm fine with it. No problems.  But I love to have a different version just because. But then I'd want different versions of everything on The Beatles scale.

I'd have Buckethead play a million riffs over the bad songs to vastly improve them.

But there are no bad songs on GUP!

Re-record the bass tracks with the Fender Jazz. Turn the gain on the guitar up by just another notch. Done.

change the order of songs, especially side 1, so you separate the mid tempo songs in minor keys. That's the one thing that bugs me about GUP is that the songs sound so similar to each other. A good producer would have caught that and corrected it.

Agreed, I think having two consecutive songs where Geddy's bass collects dust was unwise. Here's how I would fix the running order:

1. DEW

2. Body Electric

3. Afterimage or RSA

4. Enemy Within

5. Kid Gloves

6. Red Sector A or Afterimage

7. Red Lenses

8. BTW

Just a random thought. It might be interesting if Between The Wheels ends up sounding a little more like Subdivisions.

Would that be a good thing?

I did use the word interesting.   :)

The mix is generally fine. The fixes exist in other places, such as composition/arrangement/instrumentation choices. It's in these areas where a producer has real value.

I really really like Presto overall, but that did make me laugh.

💯 But I'm super intrigued to see what Broon does with it.  These f***ers (respectfully) are gonna take my money again!

The album has kind of a mono feel to it. Guitars and keyboards are very blended. And if no keys, then the guitars are pushed back - like With Red Lenses.

I think the instruments could use some more separation - and perhaps more panning.

When you play say, Grand Designs, after Red Lenses, or Afterimage, you can hear very distinct differences. Guitars have this ebb and flow. Drums feel much more live and stand out sonically from the other instruments. I know it’s a matter of taste, but PoW is the high water mark for the band as far as mixes go.
