blueschica Posted June 9 Posted June 9 (edited) Sad news. Sly Stone, the funk/rock/psychedelia pioneer, has passed away from COPD. If you have ever heard Everyday People, Dance To The Music, or I Wanna Take You Higher, you've heard his genius! He and his band are one of those ones I could listen to all day. There was a great documentary on Hulu this winter that's still available, called Sly Lives- The Burden Of Black Genius. It's worth a watch to see him and his band in action! They are also the standout performance in Summer of Soul, the Questlove documentary about the Harlem Arts Festival of 1969. It's really good as well. He also dealt with being celebrated as a music genius from the time he was a child in gospel groups, and it was tough for him in some ways. He had a very long period of trouble with guns and drugs. (For awhile, before Guns n Roses hit, Duff McKagan lived in a sleazy apartment down the hall from Sly. A memorable line from Duff's autobiography is his girlfriend yelling frequently' "Duff! Get that crack smoking dude out of our bathroom!" Sly's own girlfriend wouldnt let him smoke in their place and Duff didnt have the heart to turn him away.) https://variety.com/2025/music/news/sly-stone-dead-funk-rock-pioneer-family-stone-1236423831/ Edited June 9 by blueschica 2

Fridge Posted June 10 Posted June 10 Sad news....the funkmeister himself.....I always used to get a chuckle at the little nod to "Dance to the Music" at the end of Over my Head by KIngs X 2
HemiBeers Posted June 10 Posted June 10 I remember seeing him on the Mike Douglas show and he was tripping on something. Mike wasn't sure how to deal with him during the interview. Must see TV. That's a long lifetime for someone with addiction. 2

invisible airwave Posted June 10 Posted June 10 I just realized I've heard more covers of their songs that I thought. Everyday People - Joan Jett Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again) - Soundgarden If You Want Me to Stay - RHCP People Everyday (chorus only) - Arrested Development One I won't mention because of the explicit title but those who've seen the recent Paramount Plus documentary and read the new book about Lollapalooza know what I'm talking about regarding Ice T and Perry Farrell. Body Count covered it a year later. The less said about that awful "Mike Love Experience" cover, the better. 2

Watched his Saturday morning cartoon show a lot, though. RIP Spleen. 1
