napoleonj Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 It’s up! I’ve seen no other notices but the track listing is available and Garden Road is available to listen to. Mastering on that sounds good. Other than pre-Fly By Night stuff, doesn’t appear to be much we don’t already have. Maybe there will be more bells and whistles in the set. Also says available Nov 15, 2024 which is just… Hmmm. 1

BanterFromTheCosmos Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 (edited) Super excited about Not Fade Away and You Can't Fight It finally getting a digital release! I fully expected Geddy or Alex to veto their inclusion completely! The rest of the tracklisting's not what I would've done, and there are a couple odd choices throughout, but at least it's comprehensive and every era is accounted for. Cautiously optimistic honestly, especially if Sean Magee mastered it. If he did, then that's great and it may mean he finally remastered the post-Mercury live albums. Pretty much all of them sound like garbage on CD and are overdue for an update. While I'm likely completely off, I'm really hoping this release is actually just a condensed version of a much larger box set featuring every studio and live album plus bonus material. If they're only releasing what's been listed on iTunes, then it's a shame that they're not putting out the entirety of the Agora Ballroom, Electric Lady Studios, and Los Angeles 2015 concerts. Those are the only shows represented here that don't come from previous releases. Well, I guess the former two already have grey market releases, but Anthem may as well put out official versions anyway. I'm also curious if the newly released Dolby Atmos mixes of the debut, 2112, AFTK, and Hemispheres have anything to do with this. Maybe not, but we'll see. Or how about those random Exit Stage Left YouTube uploads from October? Frankly, I find it kind of difficult to imagine that was just an off the cuff decision; the audio is either the original laserdisc mix vastly cleaned up or a brand new mix entirely. I've heard people claim both, but either way, there was clearly work done with the sound. Anthem could've easily taken the lazy approach and just uploaded the DVD version instead. That they didn't shows an awareness of how awful those Replay remixes are. That comment about plans for the Toronto '97 concert in that Conan O'Brien interview earlier this year also seems to align more with this 50th anniversary thing, if there is a bigger box and not just what's been revealed on Apple Music. Makes more sense to release it here rather than waiting for, what, a 30th or 40th anniversary edition of Test for Echo? Edited December 4, 2024 by BanterFromTheCosmos
grep Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 Besides the early singles, I have to say that this is pretty ...meh. And why not the studio Garden Road? WTF? 1
Holdyourfireal Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 Again, wake me up for the GUP 40th announcement. 2
zepphead Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 Nothing much here that I don't already have. I am still holding out for some new soundboard shows but I fear it's a lost cause!! 3
TheAnarchist2112 Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 I'm really excited to finally have an official release of the last performance of what you're doing and working man... 1
BanterFromTheCosmos Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 (edited) How much do you want to bet Not Fade Away and You Can't Fight It are going to be sourced from needledrops? Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. I also don't see why they're using performances from the 40th anniversary sets either. I guess for raritiy's sake, I'd swap The Rhythm Method on disc 3 with the Different Stages version of Force Ten since that was only present on the Japanese release. The live Vital Signs B-side plus the single edit of the Weapon also would've been extremely welcome choices as they're only on the vinyl in that garbage Signals 40 box. Then again, I feel like this would've required someone at the label to do actual research. Oh well. The presence of the encore from their final concert here shows that Anthem's yet again opting to merely trickle out live material in pieces rather than getting a full show out there. R40 Live itself seems comprehensive enough since it has every song they played on that tour, but still. As for the Agora Ballroom and Electric Lady Studios stuff, that's already floating around in bootleg land and there's also some grey market CD releases, so maybe they feel less compelled to put out the whole thing. I imagine they're just using the circulating versions though, but it'd be nice if they did have better tapes to work with. I'm starting to feel more mixed on this set overall, but I'll reserve final judgement until the official reveal, just to see if there's additional content on a potential physical edition. Again, I'm pretty sure that's 100 percent wrong and the tracklisting above is all we're getting. The more I look at the song choices however, the more it's starting to feel like a condensed edition meant for people who don't want a larger box set. After estimating the track timings, none of the discs use the full 80 minute capacity of a CD; the longest one's an hour and 14 minutes. There's definitely space for more material, even though I get that they're trying to keep the number of songs limited to 50 (of course). Not having some kind of video content to go along with the comp would be a little odd though. I dunno. It's hard to fathom that those 'out of nowhere' ESL YouTube uploads and the work that was supposedly done with Toronto '97 were for no reason whatsoever. Perhaps that really is the case and the uploads were a spur of the moment thing, and the '97 show was worked on just because they could. Edited December 4, 2024 by BanterFromTheCosmos 1
invisible airwave Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 Not really surprised it got postponed. Lot of reissues and compilations have done this of late. I'll just create my own playlist of the tracks on Youtube.

thizzellewashington Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 The early stuff and the stuff from the final show at the Forum are just enough to get me to buy this if there's a physical release. 2

First time on CD and vinyl if those are planned A Passage to Bangkok (Live in Manchester) Permanent Waves 40, probably included since it's missing from the CD version What You're Doing / Working Man / Garden Road (Live at the Forum, Los Angeles, California - 8/15/2015) Previously unreleased Guess I'm buying this for these although the only recordings I don't have CD recordings of are the first single, The Laura Secord songs, The Vault editions and the final 2015 medley. (I'd really love them to release the 8/1/15 CD/DVD package one day.) Seems like they are trying for the delicate balance between the novices and the more experienced. They may have succeeded in that but I have to admit I'm a little disappointed there isn't previously unreleased material, even if it's just more live bread crumbs. 1

BanterFromTheCosmos Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 (edited) It seems like they wanted to showcase each album with only a single studio track and then use one or two live cuts. Rush, FBN, and COS don't have any deluxes yet, but the first album got some unusually healthy representation here with three different concerts accounted for, not to mention the presence of the debut single. And I'm thinking that sudden drop of a new Dolby Atmos mix last month wasn't for nothing. I may be completely delusional here, but is this hinting at a potential self-titled 50th and this comp is completely seperate from that? Most likely not, but it would be neat if it does happen. A 50th including the Magee remaster, all three of those concerts, the Atmos remix, You Can't Fight It, and Not Fade Away would make for a solid release. Much better than the 40th, which more or less was just a vinyl remaster with a bunch of papers inside a box. 2112 40 might be accounted for here with Something for Nothing, but it's hard to tell. AFTK thru MP all use two songs their 40ths, but tellingly, Signals still has no live content. If there was archival material and they couldn't use it on Sig40, then this release would've been the only other time to let any of it out. Seems like there really is nothing aside from audience recordings. And maybe it means nothing, but Grace Under Pressure, like AFTK thru MP, is also represented with two live songs and not just one. Both tracks are already available on GUP Tour, but why have two tracks and not just one like the rest of the normal live albums? I think there's a decent chance that the P/G 40 bonus content will be a full Maple Leaf Gardens peformance. Time will tell. From Power Windows onward, it looks like they mostly went with only one track from the standard live albums since there are no 40th anniversary releases to steal from, but Time Machine 2011 went with two cuts again. Not sure why that is. There are also two R40 tracks, but the second song is previously unreleased and from a different show than what we got in 2015. I wanna take a crappy guess and say the official announcement is going to happen on Wednesday, just because it's 12/11/2024. Anthem has done these cheesy ''2112'' reveals before with the original 2112 deluxe and MP 40, so I wouldn't put it past them to do it again with R50. Otherwise, they'd have to reveal it by mid-January if it's coming on Feb. 7th. The real question is whether or not there'll be a physical edition, and if so, then will it have more content? Apple Music calls this release a 'super deluxe', so it wouldn't surprise me if it at least comes with a blu-ray if a CD or vinyl version is planned. Even just having all of the 80s concert films with better sound than Replay x3 + Toronto 1997 would be enough to warrant a purchase from me. Edited December 5, 2024 by BanterFromTheCosmos 2

grep Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 In any case, it's not out there on Amazon Unlimited. Yet.
BanterFromTheCosmos Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Why is this only on Apple Music right now? I wonder if it wasn't supposed to be posted until the official reveal.

If the footage doesn't exist anymore, then maybe they could still try putting the audio for the full concert on the blu-ray. With the songs that were on the GUP video, they could use the footage for those songs and have some tour photos as a slideshow for the material that got cut out. I think that'd be a good compromise if they can't find the remaining video.

BanterFromTheCosmos Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 Unless you count the Vault Editions and live performances, it's incredibly bizarre that there's techincally nothing from self-titled or Hemispheres.
