I just read this. Sad, but he did have some health issues.

Whilst Maiden dispensed with his services in 1981, his legacy will be the two fine albums he made with them.

RIP Paul.

From the band's Twitter account.

Monday 21st October 2024

We are all deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Paul Di'Anno earlier today. Paul's contribution to Iron Maiden was immense and helped set us on the path we have been travelling as a band for almost five decades. His pioneering presence as a frontman and vocalist, both on stage and on our first two albums, will be very fondly remembered not just by us, but by fans around the world.

“It’s just so sad he’s gone,” comments Steve Harris. “I was in touch with him only recently as we texted each other about West Ham and their ups and downs. At least he was still gigging until recently, it was something that kept him going, to be out there whenever he could. He will be missed by us all. Rest in peace mate ⚒⚒.”

We were very grateful to have had the chance to catch up a couple of years ago and to spend time with him once more. On behalf of the band, Rod and Andy, and the whole Iron Maiden team, we extend our deepest sympathies to Paul's family and close friends. Rest In Peace Paul.

And what a legacy it is!

Oh f**k, this is really really sad.

I have a couple of boots of him opening for KKs Priest just a year ago over in the UK. He sounded really good and strong.  Was even talking about how he was close to getting out of the wheelchair.

RIP. \m/

Sad news, he was due to play Glasgow in the very near future and I was considering going along for nostalgic reasons :eh:

He seemed quite a complex character and probably not a great role model, but a very distinctive voice and persona that defined the original Maiden era.

I doubt they would've been as huge without Bruce Dickinson, but they were never bettered with Paul at the microphone IMO...

Sad.  He had a rough life after Maiden, not all of it his own fault.  They never outdid those 2 albums, either.

Yeah they did.

DiAnno = Roth

Dickinson = Hagar

Thus, they did.

Nah,

Di'Anno = Peter Gabriel

Dickinson = Phil Collins

One is less popular but loved by purists, and the other is the big mainstream success.

I think both are amazing but to act like they didn't evolve beautifully after the first two albums is insane. If NOTB had Di'Anno on it, it would still have been a masterpiece. Different, but excellent.

I'm doing nothing of the sort. I just mentioned that the Bruce era marked the start of their era of mainstream success. The band obviously pushed themselves and their sound for several albums after. Though my comparison kind of falls apart as they went more prog over time while Genesis did the opposite.
