Entre_Perpetuo Posted January 2, 2024 Posted January 2, 2024 (edited) I listened to about 56 newly released albums last year (most of them only once or twice though) and this is how I ranked them. I’d say it would slot in somewhere around André 3000 and Within Temptation. EDIT: I did also listen to PetroDragonic Apocalypse by King Gizzard many months after it came out, but I forgot to rank it. I think it would go somewhere around Squid and Jessie Ware. It was really good. EDIT 2: Ope, and I listened to Stone by Baroness, which I really enjoyed. That would probably fall in around Shame and Genesis Owusu Edited January 2, 2024 by Entre_Perpetuo 1
zepphead Posted January 3, 2024 Posted January 3, 2024 I'll be back on this one, but I cannot promise such an extensive list as Entre_Perpetuo's mighty effort!! 1 1
The Analog Cub Posted January 3, 2024 Posted January 3, 2024 Haken - Fauna Tesseract - War of Being King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse Foo Fighters - But Here We Are QOTSA - In Times New Roman Never got around to the new Steven Wilson album. Still on my list. The new Porcupine Tree live album kicks some serious ass. 1
Segue Myles Posted January 3, 2024 Posted January 3, 2024 Okay, I've had a weird year. Barely listened to new albums, but I have some: 1. The Gaslight Anthem- History Books This feels like something many will write off as bleh, but the album felt like a return home to a style of music I am increasingly fond of again. Bruce Springsteen cameos on the title track, but the album as a whole is beautifully understated and feels like a classic to my ears. 2. Taylor Swift- 1989 (Taylor's Version) When this album came out, I was confused as to why she released the vault tracks on the same disc as the re-recording. Then I played it a few times before it clicked: 1989 TV works, bonus material and new material all, as one brilliant pop album. The new recordings blow the original out of the water, the bonus material is sublime, and oddly, the way the album glows start to finish is now so smooth the listening experience feels shorter. I was lukewarm to the original 1989, I now think this is the most spectacular and immaculate pop album of the century to date. 3. Avenged Sevenfold- ...Life Is But A Dream Oh I hated this, but could I stop listening to it? No, I was compelled. Now I think it's a work of genius. Few bands this big take risks THIS left of the field. Masterpiece. 4. Taylor Swift- Speak Now (Taylor's Version) Mick and I have different opinions. For me, this album is wonderful in both its iterations. What makes thus special for me is the Vault tracks. I love each and every one. Foo Fighters- But Here We Are I didn't know I needed this til I heard it. Beautiful. 1
bluefox4000 Posted January 3, 2024 Posted January 3, 2024 (edited) In no order (except for number 1 that is) 1. Avenged Sevenfold-Life is but a dream 2. In Flames-Foregone 3. Haken-Fauna 4. Periphery-Djent is Not A Genre 5. Steven Wilson-The Harmony Codex 6. Peter Gabriel-I/O 7. Steve Lukathar-Bridges 8. Olivia Rodigo-GUTS 9. Taylor Swift- 1989 TV That's about as much as i can get. with my neice and nephew i don't consume THAT much new stuff anymore but the list here are some GREAT albums. A7X remains my fav with albums from In Flames and Haken and Steven wilson being nice surprises. the Swift MIGHT be a cheat but it's far and away her best re-record. It also blows me away that this year gave us that weird time where Take me back to Edan was a thing as it seems now Sleep Token has fizzled a great deal. All and all what i likd this year i loved. and i had to edit to talk about A7X some more . they're album blows me away. Zappa-esque in it's pure abadonment of fitting inside a pretty box. what a risk and they didn't seem to care. "here it is. if you like it great. if not that's a you problem." Segue's journey with it made my year. KNEW he'd hate at first., after a decade i know his reactions to things a bit, lol. but he came around. Mick Edited January 3, 2024 by bluefox4000 1

Yeah I feel like if I get half a dozen new releases from bands I know and maybe discover a new band for my rotation that's a really good year. I simply wouldn't have the time or energy to devote that level of attention to much more, and I've got a desk job for a living. Edited January 3, 2024 by The Analog Cub 1

If I didn’t get into it on first or second listen I didn’t bother trying harder for the most part. I suppose I could have given more of these more of a shot, but I’m very satisfied with those top ten, and a few outside as well. I spun them all a great deal.

See the beauty of my desk job is I can listen to music while I work, hence the only giving most of these one or two spins unless they immediately stuck out to me as great.

I did a more extreme version last year with one a day and quickly realized I didn't have time to properly digest most works. It did introduce me to a lot of new music, but most of what stood out had to stand out immediately. I often had to go back and remind myself what some of the material I listened to earlier in the year even sounded like. My new goal is just listen to 50 albums 7+ times. The only rule is the albums have to have been previously unknown to me. It'll be like buying a new album at the store each weekend and sitting with it at home for a week to see if I really like it or not. 2
