JohnRogers Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Rio has got some of the best bass playing in all of rock ‘n’ roll. Certainly top-five bass playing in a rock song. 6

Even Ozzy Osbourne says John Taylor is one of his favorite bassists. Love that intro to My Own Way. Strangely, my CD copy of Rio that I got in August 2000 has the alternate second verse about not rhyming on Hold Back the Rain compared to most streaming services. 2

JohnRogers Posted July 10, 2023 Author Posted July 10, 2023 (edited) John Taylor isolated, especially starting around 2:35. Edited July 10, 2023 by JohnRogers 6
Maverick Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 (edited) I didn't say it was awful, or that John Taylor is not a great bass player. But Rio is in the Top Five in all of Rock? Edited July 10, 2023 by Maverick
78jazz Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 I don't know about top 5 of all rock, but it is easily one of the better '80s tunes (same for the first half of that decade, which I think was more interesting than the second half).
Laurabw Posted July 11, 2023 Posted July 11, 2023 (edited) I don't really care where this album falls in all rock, but it is in my top 10 of everything. Edited July 11, 2023 by Laurabw 6

Girls on Film is up there with some of Geddy's best work. 1

I've liked this song ever since it came out in the '80s, and I hated most of the new wave stuff back then (I've come around on some of it in recent years). Obviously the bass was the big draw with this song. John is pretty well locked in there. 1

BigMontanaSKY Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 Duran Duran is a guilty pleasure of mine. Just sharing. 3
BastillePark Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 I think they didn't get the credit they deserved because they're pretty boys. Really disappointed that I missed their concert when they recently came to town. 1
New_World_Man Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 One of my favorite albums from that genre from that era.
