German police investigating Roger Waters

Recommended Posts

From CNN: Who knew wearing Nazi uniforms would be such a big deal?

A) I get he's done this for years, he's criticizing fascistic dreams of control, and he's not really trying to stir up anti-Semitic fervor, but . . .

B) he probably should have known that Germany doesn't have much of a sense of humor about Nazism, and, frankly, I just love the idea of Roger Waters being hassled.

When I saw his show last year there was an announcement before the concert started and it "warned" the listeners that there would be uncomfortable and maybe inflammatory images and words and if we found them offensive we could "f**k off" to the bar or words to that effect.

JMO, but Roger Waters seems to hate Nazism in the same way Sam Malone hated Diane Chambers in the first few seasons of Cheers.

The fact that Pink is a self insert character and The Wall is based in autobiographical experiences doesn’t really help his case.

It seems really off and disingenuous to insist on using  an offensive costume  to make your point  when you are as gifted with words and music as he is.

Him, Clapton and Morrissey have become the unholy trinity of musician wankery of late.  Ha ha charade he is.  I'll add the Gallagher brothers of Oasis as well but they've been wankers from day one.

I don’t mind the Gallagher’s so much, they usually only act like idiots about each other or about other musicians, and honestly I find it hilarious how blindingly conceited they are.

I think Waters is an asshole, but I think his behavior, to the extent I've read about this story is fine.   It's clearly not pro-Nazi.  It's kind of like those who wish to ban performances of To Kill a Mockingbird because of the n-word, depriving readers of its  strong message against racism.

Not that anyone should need to hear these to be anti-Nazi or anti-racism, but the reinforcement of that message shouldn't be a negative.

It`s comforting to know that some countries are still keeping an eye on extreme far right ideology.

It would be discomfiting to know that, given European history, some countries seem to limit their vigilance to one type of authoritarianism.   All are harmful.

(Regretfully) the actions of most European nations have less direct affect on the UK now. But the Tory party have made such a dramatic shift to the right that many an American conservative might feel relaxed here (except for the fact nobody speaks of religion). The health service is shot, immigrants and people with health issues are being demonised again, the buying power of a person`s salary is about 20% less here than in the mainland of Europe... but I do agree that there`s very little good about extremes on any side. I do wish that the US had a better grasp of the concept of socialism though, as it seems to be intertwined with communism in the heads of many.

Personally with the rise in anti-semitism globally, there is never an excuse to find humour in publicly wearing anything that evokes Nazi Germany. I work alongside Jews and also do Side work for Jewish charities.

I don't think he intended any harm, but there are many countries where its getting less tolerance for Jewish communities.

Replace "Tory" with "Republican" and you've just described the USA. The people called Marxists or even Left here are pretty much centrists in most of the world but the Republicans have gone so far right that the typical Democrat seems far left.

It's more that there really isn't any libertarian right anywhere but the US.  Between the authoritarians on the right and left that's all you have on that continent.

To label the Tories as somehow "right wing" is a complete joke.  All mainstream parties across the pond see government, rather than a lack thereof or at least taking a reduced role in society, as the solution to every problem.

He's literally done this in Germany before with no outrage. This is supposed to make you uncomfortable. He's a pompous jerk, but he can frame his show however he likes. If folks don't like it, they shouldn't buy tickets.
