165. "Tai Shan," Hold Your Fire (1987)

Hold Your Fire - Entry 1 out of 10

Hold Your Fire is an album that I am kinder to the more I listen to it. Despite its bland mixing, I would say that this album is quite solid throughout most of it. Save for "Tai Shan," the group's least favorite track. This song seems to go nowhere when sometimes it should, and it ruins the album's conviction. Bland. Shame that this song could've been something more.

What do you guys think? Do you agree with the band that this is the worst song (or one of the worst ones), or is this an underrated gem?

173. “Half The World” - 1/11 TFE
172. “Anagram (For Mongo)” - 1/11, PR
171. “Bravest Face” - 1/13, S&A
170. “Virtuality” - 2/11, TFE
169. “Dog Years” - 3/11, TFE
168. “Seven And Seven Is” - 1/8, FB
167. “BU2B2” - 1/12, CA

166. "Face Up" - 1/10, RTB
165. "Tai Shan" - 1/10, HYF

 Very, very unrated gem.

This one I respectfully disagree with you on.  Easily in my top 100.  The only reason I can't say that it would make my top 50 (or higher) is that Rush just has so many awesome songs.  As a result songs that are just wonderful get knocked down in the rankings through no fault of their own - its not that they are bad, Rush just has even more amazing work.  No, this is a very enjoyable song.  Needs to be much higher.

Keep this ranking coming.  This is very interesting.

Like a lump of coal. Needs pressure, heat and time before it has a chance to shine.

Sorry.... Even Lerxst dislikes the song. It's True!

164. "Peaceable Kingdom," Vapor Trails (2002)

Vapor Trails - Entry 1 out of 13

Aside from the controversial mixing... Vapor Trails was an exciting album for Rush fans at the time. The one stale chip of the bunch was "Peaceable Kingdom", a song in response to 9/11. Not to knock the subject itself, but it feels very odd on this album. I would've also expected Rush to given this song some more emotion...? It is in a weird placement on the album after a song like "Ghost Rider" - yes, I sometimes tap the skip button on this one.

Do you agree with this placement? Is it too late or early for Vapor Trails to make an appearance for you? What would be your pick for 'filler' tracks on this album and why?

173. “Half The World” - 1/11 TFE

172. “Anagram (For Mongo)” - 1/11, PR
171. “Bravest Face” - 1/13, S&A
170. “Virtuality” - 2/11, TFE
169. “Dog Years” - 3/11, TFE

Far too early for anything from Vapor Trails to be making an appearance. Despite it being different subject matter from the rest of the album, it is still a great song.

There is no filler on this album!

They were working on the framework of the song as an instrumental.  Then after seeing the events unfold, Neil wrote new words - and they reworked to song to fit them.

I picked up VT at J&R Music in downtown Manhattan on release day. Played the CD on the portable on the walk back to work.

Peaceable Kingdom was surreal to listen to as I walked past the devastation, the temporary power and phone lines stretched out across the streets, and all the emergency vehicles from around the country.....

So it's a personal fave for me, but I can understand why it rates so low in your ranking.

O boy.  Sigh.  I am going to have to (briefly) beat a dead horse here to answer the question.  I will try to be honest but positive.

My dislike of VT is well known.  That being said, it is because of VT that I view Rush as actually having more than 173 songs.  What?  Let me explain.

The short of it is that its very rare (IMO) that a re-mix significantly changes the songs on a record.  However with VT that is what happened.  I find the original mix to be impossible to listen to - trust me, I have tried and tried and tried and tried and....  I just get a splitting headache when I try to listen to it.  Even if I have the volume lowww.  The re-mix is just a different album.  I can actually listen to it.  Not that I like it - I don't.  But its something I can listen to without reaching for some aspirin or Tylenol.  Its so different that I basically consider it to be a separate album.  Hence more than 173 songs.

So I would have Dog Ears and Virtuality at the bottom of my list.  Then basically the original VT.  However, mixed in with the original there are a couple of almost tolerable songs.  The 2 best on the album would be Ghost Rider and Peaceable Kingdom.

Then, and I have never really sat down and thought this through fully, I would have some mix of songs including the re-mix of VT, BU2B2, Bravest Face, The Necromancer and some other weak songs (inc. Ghost Rider and Peacable Kingdom from the original mix. - they are almost tolerable, not good)..  Note, I do know what my top 11 Rush songs are.  Why 11 and not 10?  Somehow I got thinking about my top Rush songs at some point and right away I was like "These are my top 3.  No doubt."  5 seconds latter I was like "Hmm, these are the next 8 songs from Rush I really like.  After that it gets hard to rank them .  But those 11 were easy."

So to answer your question - I would have already had VT make multiple appearances on the list by this point.  But Peaceable Kingdom?  No way - rank it higher than this.

Keep this great thread coming - this is really fun.

Serves as a fine closer to Roll the Bones. Not sure if I really like the vocal choices that much.

Obviously my thoughts about VT impact my ranking but, once you get around that, this is a ranking I would mostly agree with.  Not a terrible song but nothing very special either.

162. "War Paint," Presto (1989)

Presto - Entry 2 out of 11

Another track from Presto that is nothing special for me. It's definitely more interesting than "Anagram (for Mongo)", I'll give it that. Kind of like "You Bet Your Life," I really don't appreciate some of the vocal choices here that much, especially at the end with the "Boys and girls together/Let's paint the mirror black".

What is your take on this one? Is this one of your favorites from Presto, or is this nothing special to you?

Presto is either my 5th or 6th favorite Rush album.  Not a bad song on it and I will listen to it and never skip a song.  So anything from Presto is likely to be in my top 100.  This particular song just fits in with everything else - which is to say I enjoy it.  Great no.  Thats one thing with Presto.  The title track might be a top 25 song.  Everything else is further back.  But the album is very consistent.  Like I said, not a bad song.  So great no.  But very good yes.  Obviously I would rank this song much higher than 162.

This is a really fun thread- looking forward to whatever comes up next.

Strongly disagree.  War paint is a top 50 song.   The music...more masculine when singing about the guy, a more feminine sounding touch when singing about the girl.

A nice energetic and electric song.

The song was fantastic live too.

🤔 Yeah, I found Presto a tad disappointing when I purchased the album the day it came out back in ‘89.
To this day , I personally slightly prefer Roll the Bones over it.

I Remember being so elated in ‘93

when the boys returned to a more Hard Rock sound with the release of Counterparts

Lists such as this are largely subjective -- and you did name this list as YOUR rankings, so we're not allowed to tell you that you're wrong about this song or that song. But this song is pretty unique for Rush, with Alex's snarky chords and Geddy playing chords right along with him, and Neil actually grooving in the verses. So this is the first song on this list (so far) where I completely disagree with where it's placed, especially considering that we somehow haven't seen Second Nature yet.

The thing about Presto is it can be both, effortlessly.  Which is the perfect way to describe Presto, effortless.

This tuneless song gives me a headache, even the remixed version.   VT has grown on me, a lot, but this is down there with Freeze and Out of the Cradle on the must-skip list.

161. "For What It's Worth," Feedback (2004)

Feedback - Entry 2 out of 8

Okay, I'll come out with this - I am not a huge fan of Feedback (and I think that you might've guessed that already). I think lots of these covers would've done much better for Rush if they did this when they started out in '74 or '75 - as an EP or maybe part of an album. In 2004... - yikes, this is a definitely a missed opportunity. These guys sound heavily mature and the mixing is not in too much of favor. Another underwhelming and out of place cover from this EP, but it's at least more interesting to hear than "Seven and Seven is".

What's your opinion on this cover? What's your opinion on Feedback as a whole?

I love that they did a cover album and Love's a great band, they did a good job with "Seven and Seven Is"

That said, I also wouldn't bother ranking the songs at all. I don't think the word "cover song" and Rush go together. It was a one-off, and never intended to really be taken as a proper Rush album. They didn't do anything to the songs to make them "Rush." They're played pretty straight.

My list would ignore them.

My list also would drop several tracks off that first album into the bottom ten. Need Some Love? Now those are terrible lyrics. I get the hate for Dog Years, they're bad because they're trying to be deep and Need Some Love was just an excuse to have vocals happen while rocking. But still. It's a terrible song.

And as Rush proper goes, the Neil era, I HATE Stick It Out.  Red Lenses also can grate.

Now, to the choices in your bottom 12 here:

Half the World is definitely a lower tier song, it doesn't bother me, but I never need to listen to it.
Anagram. I love this song. I'm possibly the only one. I love word games, and play online boggle constantly. I have a massive affection for words. I think Neil was just playing around with anagrams. There's no deep meaning, nothing serious being attempted at all. It's just him having fun with words. I love it for that reason. Musically it goes no where, it wouldn't be a top song for me. But I love most Rush songs, and this one is one of them.
Bravest Face annoys me from the beginnning. Good choice.
Virtuality was never going to age well and was silly at the time. Good choice.
Dog Years Love the music, hate the lyrics. I can't rate it this low because sometimes, if I'm busy working, I can ignore the words. So it's nowhere near this low for me. Unless I am listening to listen.
Seven Doesn't count, not really a Rush song
BU2B2 Is this really a song? It's just a segue
Face Up I like it. Cheesy, but whatever. Doesn't bother me. Middle tier song.
Tai Shan Doesn't bother me at all. It's an idea that should have been developed into an short epic. It's the beginning or middle of an epic. Alone it feels incomplete.
Peaceable Kingdom Doesn't bother me, but I never choose to listen to it either.
You Bet Your Life I have always liked this song, sue me. It's corny, but whatever. I can't say you're wrong. I like it anyway.
War Paint I like this song. The outro is a bit too after-school-special for me, but I still like the rest of it. It goes much higher on mine.

161. “For What It’s Worth” - 2/8, FB

Right there with you.  Meh.

160. "The Way the Wind Blows," Snakes & Arrows (2007)

Snakes & Arrows - Entry 2 out of 13

...And my least favorite 6+ minute Rush song goes to "The Way the Wind Blows." Not bad by any means, but its welcome wanes out upon listening. The main riff is not impressive to me, and the chorus just drags on. I get that the boys wanted to go for a mostly mid-tempo album, but yeeeesh they seriously could've trimmed out a few tracks from this one - it's 62 minutes long!

Did I slam one of your favorites from Snakes & Arrows, or do you not care for this one either? Do think this album is perfect length, or could've it used the trim?

I would respectfully differ with you on this one.  Then again, I consider S & A to be their best album this side of Presto.  Counterparts is reasonably close but I consider S & A to be better than Counterparts.  This song is one of the many very good songs on the album.

Their are some songs I would have trimmed from this album (Bravest Face & Mal Nar come right to my mind) but this is not one of them.  I would rank it migher - much higher (top 100).

BTW - daily posts work great for me.  I look forward to them.

Perfect opportunity to grab a beer on the SNA tour. Both legs.

Snakes & Arrows was about eight or ten good songs -- it definitley could have used a trim. At 67% of the runtime, it would be the perfect example of addition by subtraction.
