Avenged Sevenfold - Life Is But A Dream...

If my understanding of the "prevailing wisdom" about this band has long been something along the lines of them being too mainstream or something... well this kicks those accusations in the nuts.

They are amazing. Glad you love the new album!

Sleep Token-Take Me back to (a boring blend of pop bops) 6/10)

I've tried.  and to be honest it's not all bad.  but again i must state how overblown this album has become.  Actually i find myself thinking man the best parts of this is the metal aspect.  when they go generic pop.....i hate to break this too fans.  it's  not inventive......it's called IMAGINE DRAGONS!!!!!!! and after sitting through you all bashing pop.......you like this????????????  AHHHHHHHHHHH@!!!!!!!!!!! i can rip my hair out:laugh2:

Lamb of God

Sacrament-(10/10)

Omens (9/10)

Resolution (10/10)

Wrath (8/10)

Wrath is the Weakest LOG i've heard (so far) but it still slaps....maybe not as hard as other albums but it slaps.

this album is really divisive.  Segue enthusiastically showed me this band and i was like "HMMMMMM for someone who bags on ID this is awfully weird because this is ID with Djent breakdowns"

that's LITERALLY all this band is......ID with Djent breakdowns and a really AWFUL anonymous mask gimmick and an a weird made up backstory, lol

A few new albums over the weekend, all quite different -

Amazon.com: Crash Of Life: CDs & Vinyl

A good hard rock album. Great guitaring as I would have expected.

Yusuf/Cat Stevens – King Of A Land (2023, Vinyl) - Discogs

Cat Stevens may be 74, but his voice is still great.

Life Is but a Dream... - Wikipedia

Hmmm.... this is VERY different for Avenged Sevenfold. I need a few more listens. Jury's out.

Orphaned Land - Sahara

Orphaned Land - El Norra Alila

Ok, this is not German folk metal.  Its Israeli metal.  So how did I find this to try it?  Well, I was listening to Scardust on Youtube (who I really like in spite of their occasional harsh vocals) and somebody mentioned this band in a comment.  Now I am not a total idiot - I take anything mentioned on Youtube with more than a grain of salt.  More like an entire block of salt.  But I decided to give them a shot.  So I watched 2 videos on youtube.  The first was a music video of a song they did and the video was very interesting.  Clearly a peace message.  Decent song.  More importantly, Hansi of Blind Guardian sang part of the song.  I have not mentioned it, but I have been watching a lot of Blind Guardian concert footage recently on youtube and I just keep going "How did I miss this group?"  Hansi could sing the German Yellow pages and I would likely enjoy listening to him do so.

The second video was live concert footage from a show they did at the Wacken festival.  Decent show but the highlight of it was that they had a belly dancer on stage with them.  Having a belly dancer is guaranteed to raise my excitement and interest.

My excitement and interest in the band.  What did you think I was talking about?  Well, yes that also...

So that got me to try these 2 albums from this group.  What did I think?  Very mixed bag.  Full of harsh, death metal growls.  Just terrible vocals.  In their concert footage there was not a lot of harsh vocals so perhaps they have improved over time.  These were their earliest albums.

The music was very interesting.  Metal with a middle eastern / prog feel to it.

So if you like death metal (which I hate) and middle eastern sounding music (which I like) you might enjoy this group.

I may chance some more of this groups work in the hopes of finding some that does not have so many harsh vocals.  But these albums I would never go back to.  Pity, the music was enjoyable.  But the vocals - no thanks.

A7X-Life is but A Dream.....(10/10)

yes 10 and i stand by my 10.  firmly.  I can see why some found this off putting and "too weird"  but to me this is a natural progression album.  A7X were always leaning weird.  this is just them embracing that side and seeing where it goes.  also among the odd is actually hooks galore if you care to hear them.

so i get the naysayers while simultaneously not getting them, lol

I need a couple more spins of it. My first listen on Sunday left me intrigued but unsure (which can't be a bad sign!!)

I forgot how good this was. Way better than his 90s material.

If this came out in the 80s it would be talked about as one of his best albums. But since it came out in the wrong decade nobody sees it that way.

there are a few of camps when it comes to this record.

1. Oh my god i love this is the best thing they ever did (me, lol.  and a LARGE portion of prog lovers)

2.  this sucks.  is this supposed to be funny.

3.  I dunno.  but i can't stop listening (you apparently, lol)

Avenged Sevenfold - Life Is But A Dream…

I’ve been really taken with a few albums this year, but none have kept me coming back for more as much as this has. At first I thought only that this was a good contender for my aoty race, but I’m starting to think it’s going to put everyone else in a race for second. I keep hearing new things. Everything from The Zombies to Polyphia.

Genesis- Nursery Cryme

King Crimson- Starless and Bible Black

One band just gaining its footing in the prog rock universe, and another at the height of its powers.

Queens of the Stone Age - In Times New Roman

It's fading a little on me, but the good stuff is hitting harder now. Paper Machete and Straight Jacket Fitting are bangers.

I often wonder about how much hearing the pre-release singles affects the initial reaction of the full album. While it did give me time to get familiar and get to really enjoy Emotion Sickness and Carnavoyeur, those do seem to be highlights from the album, and I wonder how much more I would be drawn to it as a whole initially if i hadnt heard them. I've experienced this with other albums that have come out recently. It makes me wonder if its really worth hearing the singles
