Similar to Segue's recent thread, but probably way harder, lol.

I'll see if I can figure something out.

Mine will probably be the most basic stuff

and this time not really in order. and i'm gonna double up on bands.....cause this is hard.  harder still cause not a metalhead at heart. also some albums are from bands not on my fav bands list.

1. Scenes From A Memory.

2. Master of Puppets

3. Rising (i didn't mention Rainbow in my fav bands but this one's a monster)

4. Killing Machine

5. Images and Words

6. Holy Diver

7. Crack The Skye

8. Dirt

9. Screaming for Vengeance

10. Piece of Mind

Again you asked a lot and it's probably not accurate and if you asked me for 100 fav albums i'm betting not even half would be metal (some might based on your criteria)  THIS WAS HARD!!!!! i had Paranid but switched it out for Dio's Holy Diver BTW.

Treeduck? Not metal enough?? That's about as possible as Cat Stevens singing on a Jethro Tull album... :poke:

This was hard. I made a playlist of the opening track from roughly every metal album on my iPod (figuring I probably already own my top 10), and carefully arranged them from favorite to least favorite as well as I could manage. I could list all of them out in order, but that would take a while. So here's the top 10, plus the next 20 just cuz that's interesting to me. Side note, while I did go ahead and include some Grunge by the way of Soundgarden and AiC in my entire list, I left out the likes of Deep Purple and BOC and Rush and Queen and King Crimson, all of whom have albums which could probably qualify as metal, but generally that's just not where I see them. Zeppelin I think rarely touches metal (certainly not for a whole album). Sabbath are the first proper metal band in my book. I also included 80s pop/hair metal, but excluded Van Halen as they were really their own unique animal, which could easily do metal (heavy or hair) when they wanted, but didn't really do that as a main gig.

1. Soundgarden - Superunknown

2. Dream Theater - Awake

3. Megadeth - Rust In Peace

4. Judas Priest - Stained Class

5. Megadeth - Countdown To Extinction

6. Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance

7. Dream Theater - Metropolis: Part 2. Scenes From A Memory

8. Def Leppard - Pyromania

9. Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger

10. Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence

I really surprised myself with Superunknown beating out even my favorite DT album, something I expected to take the gold for me easily so long as Rust In Peace didn't beat it.

Anyway here's what the next 20 looked like:

11. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son

12. Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn Of Events

13. Dream Theater - Distance Over Time

14. Dream Theater - Images And Words

15. Mastodon - Hushed And Grim

16. Black Sabbath - Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath

17. Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality

18. Black Sabbath - Paranoid

19. Iron Maiden - Powerslave

20. Judas Priest - Firepower

21. Metallica - ...And Justice For All

22. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

23. Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast

24. Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny

25. Caligula's Horse - Bloom

26. Anthrax - Persistence Of Time

27. Anthrax - Among The Living

28. Metallica - Master Of Puppets

29. System Of A Down - Mezmerize

30. Deftones - Around The Fur

Judas Priest - Stained Class (although Sad Wings Of Destiny runs it close)

Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (or Master of Reality )

Dio - Holy Diver

Iron Maiden - Powerslave (or Seventh Son)

Opeth - Blackwater Park (or Ghost Reveries)

Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt 2 (or Six Degrees)

Slayer - Reign In Blood

Savatage - Hall Of The Mountain King (or Gutter Ballet)

Motorhead - Ace Of Spades

Mastodon - Crack The Skye

I've kept it to one entry per band and limited it to what I reckon to be out and out metal bands rather than those which I  would classify as hard/classic rock bands.

Yeah, I stayed away from bands that often get called "hard rock," too.  I'm not sure how much that would have changed my list.  Pyromania and Back in Black probably force out Defenders of the Faith and Mob Rules.  Maybe.

In my eyes most bands are truly metal for only a few records. Something more metal comes about.

That which was once metal sometimes becomes mainstream.

Rush- ATWAS

Megadeth-sfsgsw

Megadeth-peace sells

Pantera- far beyond driven

Between the buried and me- colors & the great misdirect

Black sabbath- Paranoid

Mastodon-blood mountain

Dream theater- images and words

Buckethead- the cuckoo clocks of hell

Animals as leaders - AAL
