Your Top Ten Metal Bands (and then some)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I'm having a super fun year with metal. Not listening to anything particularly new, just immersing myself in bands I know and love so much, and discovering new (to me) bands.

I'm curious for the metalheads here, what are your absolute favourite metal bands (every genre counts).

My list is:

1. Iron Maiden

2. Trivium

3. Judas Priest

4. Blind Guardian

5. In Flames

6. Rhapsody Of Fire

7. Lacuna Coil

8. Nightwish

9. Mastodon

10. Saxon

Some of my all time favourite bands have dropped a little (for the moment) on this list.

Try and stick to ten!

I’m only super familiar with the biggest of them, but I love rankings. I’m gonna leave off anything that is likely to start an argument.

1. Dream Theater

2. Judas Priest

3. Megadeth

4. Iron Maiden

5. Black Sabbath

6. Anthrax

7. Metallica

8. Mastodon

9. System Of A Down

10. Devin Townsend

In no particular order (unless you think there's something Freudian about the order in which I thought of them):

Iron Maiden

Metallica

Motorhead

Megadeth

Black Sabbath

Mastodon

Monster Magnet

Corrosion of Conformity

Anthrax

Nightwish

Jethro Tull (kidding! That'd be 11, anyway . . . )

In no order and subject to change as I'll have forgotten a couple:

Iron Maiden

Gojira

Alchemist

Bolt Thrower

Death Angel

Ulver

System of a Down

Tengger Cavalry

Jambinai (if they count)

Anthrax

This was tough, and therefore I went quickly. Definitely missed some. Don't care if some 'aren't metal'. I definitely like all these bands.

Edit:

Just read the other submissions.

I can't believe I forgot C.O.C. they definitely are in my top ten. And Mastodon gets in. Many others have a shot, but I already have a top ten with twelve entries.

If Alice In Chains isn't metal than I don't know what else you classify them as. Very Sabbath like riffs and vocal melodies. Also, they managed to be darker than Sabbath with their song lyrics. They're as metal as any metal band has ever been.

i just know some people wouldn't call them that cause of the stupid grunge label (meaningless term)

but you're right all i hear is sabbath with the darknness knob turned to a thousand.

I definitely think that list is just for this moment in time. Savatage, Paradise Lost, Iced Earth, Sonata Arctica, Epica...they all fall into my heaviest of heavy rotations.

Seventh Son is a beast of an album.

I debated putting Rush on my list. I love them but don't always know if I deem them metal. I also ranked Nightwish and Lacuna Coil outside my top five because they are honestly not what I think of when I specifically want a "metal" fix, but they are metal.

But these days, I think of Iron Maiden as my favourite band.

They fall in my mind on that weird boundary of metal/rock. Like Rush. Am I weird?

Pound for pound they're probably one of my favorite live bands. Baizley even gave the audience screen prints for their show last tour. They said they wrote like 26 songs during COVID so I'm excited to see what behemoth double album comes out of it within the next year.

There would be so many other bands on my list if i was playing more loosely (to me) with the definition (a good example is Queen.  i don't consider them metal.  BUUUUT......i could see it i guess. 70's Queen only though.

Yeah, on my worst days I’m an atheist, on my best days I’m agnostic. I do really dig their studio recording of Winter Wonderland.
