Let's think

Sabbath

Priest

Purple

Zeppelin

BOC

UFO

Crimson

Rush

Heep

Rainbow

I'd love to toss Queen in there for the first two albums especially, but I'm not quite sure how they stack up. They'd be top 20 for sure.

UFO, Rainbow, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Motorhead.  I think also Blue Oyster Cult; I would include them.  Maybe Nazareth, and probably Van Halen?

Get some punk rock in there like Ramones and early Clash.

I veered from punk, but if we count it there's the proto punk of Death (Detroit), Stooges, MC5, Rocket From the Tombs, etc.

Or Australia with Radio Birdman, Rose Tattoo

Nobody has mentioned Grand Funk Railroad - they had their heavy moments.

Good point!  Yes, a lot of their earlier stuff was pretty heavy.  :bekloppt:

The Stooges! Van Halen! Ah how did I forget them? Also I'd argue The Sex Pistols had a heavier tone than The Ramones or The Clash, even if you couldn't actually take them seriously. Motorhead of course has to be in there, don't know why I didn't think of them.

Montrose

I've been playing there debut on and off a lot this year. What a great band! Known them for years, only really connected with them recently.

Montrose Rule !

( even all those who don’t rate Sammy much can’t deny it ! :16ton:)

The best era of Van Halen was Hagar's. (And Montrose debut is the superior first album).

Motörhead

Beat me to the punch on that one. Can't get much heavier than that. I'd put The Scorpions on that list.

Imagine how Pete Townsend must've felt when he first heard Zeppelin or Sabbath, after having previously been able to claim to have the heaviest rock song ever under his belt (I Can See For Miles), and realizing heavy music had already moved away from what The Who were feasibly capable of producing.
