Was it real, and was it spectacular?

Or was it fake? :laughing guy:

Real or not, it's rather hypocritical for him to be outraged and "defend" Jada when he cheated on her with Margot Robbie and Charlize Theron although she did the same. Don't do what Billy Joel did on a 1980 album cover. Even after that win, I stand by what I said.

Frankly, Rock should have been host again. Those three hosts were annoying as hell. There have been funny females in the past that have hosted ceremonies. Fey and Poehler were great at the Golden Globes and McKinnon would have been good. Those three, though?

Congrats to Chastain, though. One of my favorite actresses finally got one. Nice win for Brannagh as well. Belfast was a heartwarming love letter to his home and childhood.

Indeed. She's one of the best actresses of today. Masterful.

I'll be honest. I will most probably never watch it due to my intense hatred for televangelists and all other religious charlatans. I wouldn't be able to enjoy the film enough.

Funny you should say that, as that was the exact reason I initially didn’t want to see it.

It really pleasantly surprised me and proved me wrong.

Just lost all respect for Smith.

Unbelievable lack of class and self control.

Then to stand up later and ramble on and on about your call to be a vessel of love takes hypocrisy to a whole new level.

That bothered me as well. He certainly thought that he was called to be important? Sheesh.

If the academy had any backbone whatsoever they would revoke his win.

Chris Rock really handled the whole situation professionally and kept his cool.

I used to record the Oscars and Grammys and watch them (so I could skip the ads and in the case of Grammys, artists I didn't care for). I haven't done the Oscars now for about five years. The show has lost something, it just isn't as compelling and IMHO many of the movies are underwhelming.

I saw stories online about the incident and I think both Smith and Rock were idiots. Rock has always liked to be controversial and he obviously underestimated the effect his "joke" would have. That said Smith proves what kind of person he is by causing a scene. I bet Jada is more embarrassed by his tantrum.

Disappointed Belfast only got one award, such a lovely film.

I never liked W Smith as an actor and his actions tonight are a reason why I don't like him as a person.

With all the tension in the world today, do we need this?

This is a tough one to decide on here. Given Will Smith's reaction, it certainly felt like it was real. If it wasn't though it's not out of the range of the man who wins best actor to make us believe it was legitimate. Also, if it wasn't staged then where was security? There's nobody there to protect the people on stage and escort them off if something happens? That's the part that comes off as fishy to me. They just continued the show as if nothing happened instead of making sure Chris and Will were separated far away from each other in case one of them tried to do something that made things worse.

Real or staged, it got people talking about what happened at the show. I will admit I couldn't have given two shits about what happened until I read about this.

I never watch cuz I almost never gaf, but I'd like to add that I was disappointed that Jennifer Hudson didn't even get a nomination for playing Aretha and most importantly, actually singing those songs herself.

It's why a lot of people no longer watch things like awards shows and beauty pageants. People with real-life struggles (especially post-COVID) have little desire to watch the rich and famous wearing expensive things and celebrating themselves while trying to tell us how we should be thinking on political and social issues.

Given the recent tanking of TV ratings for awards shows, and given Hollywood's need for adoration and attention, it wouldn't shock me if this was staged. It certainly created some buzz, got the water cooler crowd talking, got people watching clips on social media, got those idiots on The View and the other TV magazine shows analyzing it. Clicks and views, man. Staged or not, Hollywood is now hoping this will get people to start watching the Globes and the Oscars again next year, hoping to see one rich and entitled brat slap another.

And we have the venerable Sean Penn (who is in Ukraine/Poland, doing a documentary on the Ukraine war) who demanded that the Show feature the Ukrainian President. He vowed to melt down his Oscars if they didn't do it.

As if anyone would care about what he does with his Oscars.

I never watch the Oscars but I’ve seen the Will Smith/Chris Rock clip a million times this morning. I have to say I appreciate the Alpha male response of a husband defending his wife. It was settled and then no more drama. Chris Rock handled it like a man with no whining. It was much better than a Twitter fight with people saying tough things on their keyboard behind their screen. They handled the issue and then they actually carried on. --Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene

^ yeah i pretty much agree with this. also will smith's slap was obviously not intended to harm rock physically, more of an intimidation tactic. i don't think it's a huge issue, honestly.

I wish Rock had decked him. The whole Smith family are candidates for most annoying family on the planet.

Willow's latest music has been really good if you're into pop punk at all. She's got a killer voice.

For what it's worth, I thought it seemed very real, but I was forgetting I was watching a very talented actor so.... yeah good good point. Only think I would say, if it was staged, why stage something so... random? One celebrity slaps another across the face mid speech for making a joke about his wife's hair? That almost seems too random for an organization that hands out awards for big budget movies to write. Wouldn't they try to go bigger, or more topical?
