Does this create an implicit argument against the "unfairness" of a system that doesn't assure both teams have possession?

In my opinion, it ferociously chases the "unfairness" argument right off the field. :)

NFL teams are supposed to be the best of the best. The defense has every opportunity to force a punt or turnover, and that is exactly what happened in 17 of 22 games.

I think you can argue that five is too many.

Clarification:

I should have stated that 5 of 22 overtime games were won by the team that won the coin toss and then scored a TD on their 1st possession.

It is often couched purely in offensive terms.

Plus.. win the game.

10-1 with 7 one possession games.

It's really the playoffs that matter, where you have quality teams playing for high stakes.

Except for the seventh seeds, but those teams never get close to OT anyway.

Believing the playoff rules should be the same as the regular season rules, I think the principles and not the outcomes should dictate what happens.

What are the alternative ideas?

The Ravens idea?

Regardless of scoring FG or TD the other team gets a shot to o down field?

What?

Sounds like an idea for a poll.

Does this go for the NHL?

shootouts are weak in any sport. rejected on their face... but no shootouts in playoffs.
