hello,

version 1

G+-2-2---2---------+-2-2---2----------------+

D--------4---4-3-2-+------4---4-2-----------+

A-------------------4+--------------4-3-2-4---+

E---------------------+------------------------2-+

version 2

G+-2-2---2---------+-2-2---2----------------+

D--------4---4-3-2-+------4---4-2-3----------+

A-------------------4+-----------------4-2-4---+

E---------------------+------------------------2-+

the differences sits on the D & A strings, second mesure.

any help will be appreciated.

The first seems closer. I've never seen that second version before.

This guy seems to have it right:

He's doing Max's version 2. I always thought version 1 was correct, but in the following video Geddy is playing version 2. If you go to 3;25 and slow down the video to 0.25 speed, you can see Geddy's fingering pretty clearly.

But is the fingering 4-2-3 on the D string, or 4-3-2?

4-3-2

I now see why you're asking that, looking at version 2 it shows 4-2-3, I didn't pick up on that at first. So, it should be:

G--2-2---2-----------+-2-2---2---------------------+
D------4---4-3-2-----+-----4---4-3-2---------------+
A-----------------4--+---------------4---2---4-----+
E--------------------+--------------------------2--+

yes !

apologies ! my mistake. i should have written 4-3-2 on D strings.

i understand there is no "definitive" answer although version 2 seems to be the correct one.

good news for me as I find it easier to play.

a big thanks to you all.

mB

I think that shot of Geddys left hand that I pointed out in that video is pretty definitive.

I posted a version of it years ago but in standard notation. I can't read tab

where can we find it ?

It was in this forum, but it was a photobucket link. I'll re-scan them and figure out a way to post them again.

It was a hobby I started back in '91. I decided to transcribe Limelight one night because the versions I had were nowhere near accurate. Before I knew it I was obsessed. I've done about 55 Rush tunes from the entire catalog, as well as Marillion's Misplaced Childhood album, the Who's Tommy and a few Bela Fleck tunes.

I'm sure there's software now to make it easier, but I'm old fashioned. I still sit there with a few sharpened pencils and some manuscript paper and play the song a measure or two at a time.
