Queensryche- Empire

Masterpiece.

Writing, vocals, musicianship, recording, mixing and mastering all 10/10!  When setting up a new stereo system or testing settings this album is one of my favs.

If that album is a 10/10 for everything then Mindcrime is 100/10

I've listened to Empire far more often, and I'm far more often in the mood for Empire, but I don't for a second think that it's better than Mindcrime.

Blind Guardian- A Night At The Opera

This is the most bombastic and OTT metal album I've ever heard. It's the only BG album that is taking me millions of listens to really get into.

It's very rewarding.

i'm gonna say something........i do not get people's obsession with Queensryche in general.  I mean the playing's all right.  but i'd rather chill on a nude beach with my arch-rival Dennis Deyoung than to another second of Tate's warbling.'k

god those notes go right to my sinus's, lol

I listened to a bunch of older albums this weekend -

TheresTheRub WishboneAsh.jpg

New England (album).jpg

Two mid '70s Wishbone Ash albums. Beautiful guitar work on both.

MTEtNzM5NC5qcGVn.jpeg

The Visitor by Arena. High up in my list of favourite Prog albums.

Neil Young Rust Never Sleeps.jpg

Its been a while since i listened to this. I love Thrasher.

Europe-the final countdown.jpg

Having seen them live a week or so ago, I had to give this a bash!

Scheher2.jpg

A bit of Renaissance to round things off.

Europe have an underrated discography. Their modern hard blues rock albums are stunning. They definitely aren't trying to make it as a nostalgia act, they keep on evolving.

Dark Tranquillity- Haven

This is the band's and fans least favourite album, but I adore it start to finish.

Toto - Isolation (first time listen)

Well it starts off really strong! Track 3 strikes me as a bit less substantial than the first two, and from there it's a mix of great and mid. I can see why it's not considered their peak, but it does have some definite winners.

A couple of new releases by somewhat obscure bands -

Returned To The Earth - Fall Of The Watcher

I just picked up on this band after a review on Progarchives. Very interesting, great vocals and welll worth a listen (I got it on Spotify). Recommended.

Church Of The Cosmic Skull - There Is No Time review - Metal Storm

Church Of The Cosmic Skull have been around for a while but this is their latest release (album #4). An odd mixture

of hippy-dippy, 60/70's rock and a wierd cult vibe. Interesting and not without its charm.

Blind Guardian- A Night At The Opera

Blind Guardian- A Twist In The Myth

Twist is regarded as the band's worst album. Whilst I think all their albums are great, I'm especially puzzled as thlo why this album is so looked down upon.

problem for me is i just don't like Fergie Friderikson's voice.  he spoils it cause the meterial is super strong actually.  but his voice man so high and tinny.

luckily he was one and done.  Word is he was a pain to work with David Paitch has said he recorded every song literally line by line.  and if you've heard live bootlegs from the tour he could not hack it in concert.

and he's been 1 and done in other bands too.  Trillion. Le Roux and......i don't like him in those either, lol

I love the matieral mostly so it's a shame.

Mick
