Gaaaah!

I was all ready to vote for the constantly overlooked and underrated Wishbone Ash, and then the RPG put it up against Queen. Needless to say my votes all go to Queen. But! Live Dates is phenomenal, Wishbone Ash is essential, and the guitar solo on the live version of Throw Down The Sword is transcendent.

I have given all 3 votes to Queen ..... however....

- not sure that it's fair comparing a live album to a studio album

- had the Ash album been Argus it would have taken my vote easily

- had the track been the studio version of Throw Down The Sword then this too would have taken my vote.

but........

the vote is what it is so hey ho!

the random poll generator unfortunately creates many unfair matches, but they're good fun to think about. I've often read people say they prefer the studio version of Throw Down The Sword, but I really think the live version, especially that guitar solo is stronger. What makes you prefer the studio cut?

Argus is one of my all time favourite albums - probably in my top 5.

I bought it some months after it was released purely because I had read that Ash were a band driven by twin lead guitars.

I was 14 at the time and had a crappy little record player. But I was hooked from the moment it started playing.

The twin lead stuff was fantastic - way before Thin Lizzy adopted the tactic. But the double track finale of Warrior leading straight in to Throw Down The Sword was a moment in time I will never forget.

That is the reason I favour the studio version of the song.

Ah, yes, I totally get that. See for me Live Dates was actually my first WA album. Got it in an online auction with a bunch of other stuff (most of it garbage, but cheap garbage!) and wasn't sure what to expect. I'd heard they had double leads, but that was about it. I was already enjoying the record, but when Throw Down The Sword came on it just transported me somewhere else, and then the solo. mmmm

I l always thought they should have been bigger but I am so glad to have been with them from an early stage and was fortunate enough to see them live on a number of occasions.

They definitely deserve a reappraisal, at the very least for giving Lizzy and Maiden a bright idea.

I'm with you on that!
