Tom Sawyer.....love the music, hate the lyrics...f**k off Pye Dubois.

Force10......as above (don't know if dubious Dubois was involved, don't care)

If I was thinking about the lyrics to Tom Sawyer in the way that I'm thinking about parts of songs I love in songs I don't...I would say that "his mind is not for rent/to any god or government/always hopeful yet discontent/he knows changes aren't permanent/but change is" (especially the last two lines) is something I enjoy in the middle of a bunch of stuff I don't. "mean, mean stride/mean mean pride" always annoys me, and the rest of it, "the world is the world is" etc is pretty mediocre.

Personally, I enjoy the Force Ten lyrics, with maybe the exception of the "tough times" part...

Another example I would give, although I can't honestly say that I "love" the section...but in the song Bravest Face, I think the chorus (In the sweetest child there's a vicious streak...) is good - it's melodic, the lyrics scan properly in the rhythm of the track and Geddy sings them well. It's a part I can imagine being in a good song. But the rest of it (for me) is totally forgettable and one part (though we might have precious little..) is actually unenjoyable.

It's not fair for me to make a generalization about their later work, because I'm not as big a fan of the last 3 or 4 records...but it does feel like they got into a pattern of still writing catchy choruses, (I think many of their classic songs have catchy choruses, I don't think of it as a negative statement), but the verses seem to become less so. I'm not sure if it has to do with the style of lyric writing or what...but when I think of the verses from A Farewell To Kings, Freewill, Limelight, Subdivisions, Enemy Within etc etc, they are as memorable as the choruses. (And songs like Natural Science where it's not verse/chorus, but multiple parts...each part is still catchy and memorable...) But when I think of a song like Caravan, the verses feel sort of non-descript, and then "I can't stop thinking big" jumps out as like a melodic choice.

Dog years. Song rocks, which is more than one can say about the rest of the album. But the turtle from gallapagose part, or whatever it says there, just sucks big turtle eggs. Ruins the song. No idea why the underline is happening. I didn't turn it on, it won't turn off.

That turtle part is awful

South Side of the Sky is such a killer tune, but I find the vocals in the middle bit - "laaaa laaaaa laaaaa la" - kind of irritating. I love the drumming under that section - the whole bit musically is great, but the vocals bum me out.

The problem I have with the lyrics on the last couple records, and it's a problem I've mentioned before, is the shoehorning of the lyrics into the music...like it used to be that when crafting a song, the lyrics fit seamlessly into the music. The tempo was correct for both in a way that was smooth and attractive. But the last couple of albums there was very little effort to fit the lyrics with the music, or the length of a sentence into the time frame of the alotted melodic bit (See Armor and Sword, The larger Bowl,The Anarchist, Seven Cities, etc) The result is an awkward blend of run-on sentences, ill-fitting lyrics (not in terms of content/meaning but clunky and awkward). That combined with the lower pitch to Geddy's tone (the funeral dirge, as I like to call it) just made both S & A and CA not as good for me. Not as well crafted as their earlier albums. Dont get me wrong, there are some excellent musical bits (the Anarchist is well nigh perfect musically, it's just when the lyrics come in that they lose me), it's just with some of the lyrics and lyrical bits and the way they fit, that I take exception to.

You're spot on 100%. Neil was providing lyrics on the last few records which simply couldn't be put to a good song. They were far too wordy and (IMHO) better off as poems on his personal website or somewhere else,

not as a Rush song proper. Geddy had to do a lot of awkward phrasing & shoehorning to cram in all those words.

I remember reading the lyrics to Snakes after I got the CD and most of his prose came across as long bitter jaded rants few of which stuck around in my brain even after repeated listens/read-alongs. Any fan can easily recite the classic songs such as Spirit or Limelight or Xanadu or 2112:Temples or the chorus to Dreamline etc etc. But songs like Good News First? The Larger Bowl? Only the most dedicated.

Force10......as above (don't know if dubious Dubois was involved, don't care)

Now that Fridge has given his opinion for the day I can finally sleep tonight.

Fridge is THE final (sometimes first) word on everything always. :codger:

Well, the rap section of "Roll the Bones" is all-time cringey.

Good call. I think it would have been much better if it was an instrumental section instead-like some kind of funky call-and-response interplay between the guitar, bass and drums.

Neurotica-"Rush using "BABY" in their lyrics-UGH!!! :boo hiss: :tsk:

"Oh hey, now, baby

Well, I like your smile"

"Hey, baby, it's a quarter to eight

I feel I'm in the mood

Hey baby, the hour is late

I feel I've got to move"

"Well, hey, now, baby

Don't you talk so fast"

"I just want to find out, baby

Where'd you learn what you know?"

"Hey, baby, it's a quarter to eight

I feel I'm in the mood

Hey baby, the hour is late

I feel I've got to move"

"Hey, baby, it's a quarter to eight

I feel I'm in the mood

Hey baby, the hour is late

I feel I've got to move"

"Well, hey, now, baby

I said I like your style

You really got me, baby

Way down deep inside"

"Baby, you're the one"

"Hey, baby, it's a quarter to eight

I feel I'm in the mood

Hey baby, the hour is late

I feel I've got to move

Yes, I do"

UGH! I mean, COOL, BABY! :D
