Raaj, have you bought a Z4 yet?

I want one of those things bad. Even the 4cyl felt special as hell.

FYI, the Costco sheet cake that they say is 12x16, it ain't. Noticeably larger which is ok if you're looking for the cake to dollar ratio but not ok if you only have a small get together. But it will freeze and be consumed later. Quite delicious too.

Holy f**k I love Costco

As it turns out, it's possible to be a publicly traded company that offers terrific value to customers AND treats its employees EXTREMELY well, resulting in high job satisfaction, performance, and tenures.

Who knew?

I believe Southwest also fits that description. Focusing on reducing costs while also treating employees and customers well is a very winning formula for long-term success and loyalty. It's just a difficult line to walk.

I love that Southwest Airlines only flies variations of one goddamned aircraft: the Boeing 737. It makes it so easy to streamline their whole operation. Aircraft pilots are FAA required to get type-certified on every type of plane. And airlines generally type-certify all of the remaining flight crew as well (being a flight attendant on a CRJ200 is different than being one on a 767 or an A320, different things in different places). For Southwest, if they need "a pilot" or "a flight attendant", they can just call one up, without the logistics of "oh, are they certified for the plane this route is using today?". To an extent, this will apply to their mechanics as well. So simple! Limiting, but simple!

Type-certifying hordes of pilots can be so cumulatively expensive that it was paramount to the development of the 737 MAX that it be similar enough to the 737 Classic and 737 NG that it wouldn't require FAA recertification for pilots. The MCAS system artificially made it control similar to the old planes when pilots made certain inputs in certain situations, and it's the system (that pilots weren't told existed) that played a large part in the two fatal crashes the 737 MAX had. It was that important for the sales of this plane to not require recertifying that they came up with this shit. Boeing is EXTREMELY lucky these 346 deaths happened in crashes in random poor countries--if 346 American (or European) lives had been lost, there would have been hell to pay, both legally and financially.

It's also a visible example of the consequences of trying to band-aid a 55 year old design, rather than just starting fresh with a clean sheet new plane design. Boeing is not the world beating company they used to be.

Especially when you're more concerned with keeping shareholders and the CEO happy.

Hmm, can logic and data counter people who just perpetually vomit that "young people need to work harder?"
