Most Genius Lyrics You've Ever Heard

Harry Chapin - Cats in the Cradle

Payback's a bitch....'Dad'.

Do you hear that song as being about "pay back?" I've never really thought of it that way. I've always thought that the narrator didn't realize that he put things in life that seemed like they were pressing (but there were planes to catch, and bills to pay) ahead of his relationship with his son, and only too late did he realize what he missed out on, and what type of relationship he created with his son.

For me the saddest part of that song is when the son returns from college. "He shook his head, and he said with a smile, 'what I'd really like Dad is to borrow the car keys, see you later can I have them please?'"

Great song, and a great lesson for anyone with children.

Okay, right after I created this thread I listened to Power Windows, and now I've got another genius lyric to add. I can't believe I've been obsessed with the song "Territories" for like forever and only realized this now.

The whole wide world, an endless universe

Yet we keep looking through the eyeglass in reverse

For the longest time I just thought Neil meant a spyglass, instead of an eyeglass. Like a telescope. And then I realized it could actually mean eyeglasses. If you're looking through your eyeglasses in reverse, you're looking at yourself.

If I turn my glasses around, when I look through the clarity of peripheral vision is lost. The result is tunnel vision like this, but less extreme...

All right. Yet another Power Windows lyric, but:

Some worldviews are spacious

And some are merely spaced

I mean, sure, it could just mean spaced out, but think about outer space. If your worldview is merely outer space, it's not a view of the world at all. Just space.

You can never break the chain

There is never love without pain

A gentle hand , a secret touch of the heart

Secret Touch Vapor Trails

Not only do I love the song but when Neil drove off on his motorcycle to the final fade out of the song

in Beyond the Lighted Stage...gets me every time I see it. :sigh:

She's got everything she needs, she's an artist,

She don't look back.

She's got everything she needs, she's an artist,

She don't look back.

She can take the dark out of the nighttime,

And paint the daytime black.

You will start out standing

Proud to steal her anything she sees.

You will start out standing

Proud to steal her anything she sees.

But you'll wind up peeking through her keyhole

Down upon your knees.

She never stumbles, she's got no place to fall.

She never stumbles, she's got no place to fall.

She's nobody's child, the Law can't touch her at all.

She wears an Egyptian ring that sparkles before she speaks.

She wears an Egyptian ring that sparkles before she speaks.

She's a hypnotist collector, you are a walking antique.

Bow down to her on Sunday,

Salute her when her birthday comes.

Bow down to her on Sunday,

Salute her when her birthday comes.

For Halloween give her a trumpet,

And for Christmas, buy her a drum.

She's well-acquainted with the touch of the velvet hand

Like a lizard on a window pane

The man in the crowd with the multicolored mirrors

On his hobnail boots

Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy

Working overtime

A soap impression of his wife which he ate

And donated to the National Trust

"Turn your eyes away from people,

and they'll turn their eyes from you.

It's a lesson hard to learn now,

what you are is what you do.

The world keeps turning in a circle,

the world keeps turning in a circle.

What goes around, comes around."

This is an approach/outlook I aspire to though sadly do not always achieve:

There are people in your life

Who've come and gone

They let you down

You know they've hurt your pride

You better put it all behind you baby

'Cause life goes on

You keep carryin' that anger

It'll eat you up inside

I've been trying to get down

To the heart of the matter

But my will gets weak

And my thoughts seem to scatter

But I think it's about forgiveness

Forgiveness

From "Chemistry":

"Two to one

Reflection on the water"

Okay, okay, this one might be a stretch, but think about it. 2 and 1 and reflections on water. Doesn't that sound like the 2112 album cover? And "2 1" reversed, that is, reflected, is "1 2."
