Eric Clapton - I Shot The Sheriff (Bob Marley and the Wailers cover)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0xLLPJ0bOw

That's certainly a well-known song of his, but I wouldn't say that's his most famous solo song, and certainly not the song with which he's most commonly associated.

Just curious, which song would you say he is most well known for?

Solo, probably After Midnight. Overall? Probably Layla or Sunshine of Your Love.

Genuinely never heard of “After Midnight” thought I’m not particularly familiar with his solo career. I am very familiar with his version of “I Shot The Sheriff” though.

I wasn't aware that the song 'War' which Bruce Springsteen covered live in the 80's was initially written and recorded by Edwin Starr until later.

I'm so old I had the 45 of the original version. Played the hell out of it too. RIP Edwin Starr.

For all you youngsters, a 45 is a ...................oh, never mind.

I wasn't aware initially that 'Black Magic Woman' (Fleetwood Mac), 'Oye Cómo Va' (Tito Puente), and 'Hold On' (Ian Thomas) which Santana recorded are all cover songs.

Although Santana recorded a cover of The Zombies song 'She's Not There', I was already aware of who initially recorded the song.

Hardest thing about this thread is getting covers that the band was best known for -

Here are a couple (apologies if already mentioned)

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Monkees - I'm A Believer

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U

Soft Cell - Tainted Love

I think all the above fit the criteria of best known song for each artist.

I heard that it was based on Tolstoy's War and Peace.

Oh, yeah. Tolstoy's original title was going to be "War: What is it Good For?" but his wife made him change it.

As a general philosophical statement, don't you think it was simply much more common in the '60s and '70s for bands to cover each others' songs and routinely release them as singles or on albums?

Did that start to fade in the '80s?

Yes, loads of people think of Whisky In The Jar when you mention Thin Lizzy ..... ironic as it in no way represents their musical style.

Loverboy has a song called 'Dangerous', which was written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance.

Years later, Adams released his version initially titled 'Reckless' as a bonus track from the 30th Annniversary deluxe edition of the same name.

It's not a song that either are known for per se, but it's interesting how each has different titles, but still the same.

I read Lynott hated "Whiskey in the Jar" and dreaded playing it.

Yes, after it came out they got loads of bookings for traditional Irish music clubs on the assumption that all their music was of that genre.

I don't think they ever wanted it released as a single but Decca went on ahead and released it.

Good call on DP Mark 1. Written by Joe South I do believe.

Completely disagree about Hendrix. His most famous song has gotta be Purple Haze which he wrote.

Widespread Panic did a cover of 'Honky Red' by Canadian singer-songwriter Murray McLauchlan.

Both versions are different in the musical arrangement.
