Let's start the conversation by going backwards of sorts.

The amazing 6 CD, 1 DVD boxed set, "Thin Lizzy Rock Legends" has just been released.

Touting a staggering 74 unreleased tracks, demos, radio spots and a full live show from Hammersmith 1980.

As I wrote earliar...I've just have a had a slimpse of Rock 'n' Roll heaven.

I've heard five of their albums, all of which are fantastic. Here's how I rank them:

1. Jailbreak

2. Vagabonds Of The Western World

3. Johnny The Fox

4. Bad Reputation

5. Renegade

I remember seeing them for the first time on The Midnight Special TV show. Always watch Midnight Special and Don Kirchner's Rock Concert TV shows.

I don't think they have any bad records in their discography but everything from Fighting through to Black Rose are pure gems.

I love Thin Lizzy!

That boxset is cool, and the live show sounds great. I remember buying Thunder and Lightning (their last album) first on the recommendation of one of the clerks at the local Musicland (or maybe it was Record Bar); then I got Life/Live, and I was hooked.

They are an underrated band, probably because they could never quite break it big in America. They were another of those bands at least partially held back by lots of roster turnover, too. Lynott, too, is just a romantic tragedy; you couldn't make up stuff like that.

For whatever reason, I don't think in terms of albums with them, but my top five songs are probably:

"Black Rose"

"Fighting My Way Back"

"Emerald"

"The Rocker"

"Jailbreak" (not a Real FanTM pick, I know, but I love the menace of that bass line)

Still, great guitar rock.

I remember when I learned Huey Lewis had played with Thin Lizzy (I haven't double-checked, but Lynott mentions Lewis on Live & Dangerous, I think) and I had a real moment of cognitive dissonance: I could not square the pop tunesmithing of things like "The Power of Love" with the guitar rock of Lizzy.

Happy happy St. Paddy's Day! It was just three years ago now I took a week long trip to Ireland (supposedly to do some architecture or something, which I did do) and finally visited the statue of Phil Lynott. I'd post the picture but I don't have it on the internet anywhere, lol. I left him with an Irish guitar pick I bought for the occasion. I have tentative plans to visit again next year! Anyway listening to Black Rose tonight. By my estimation, it's their best album, but they have so many incredible records. Might play Vagabonds as well. That one always makes me miss my visits to Ireland.
