The most iconic US bands I would put in the top tier are the Doors, Skynyrd, Talking Heads, REM, VH, Aerosmith, Grateful Dead...probably would add the Beach Boys.

I went with Soundgarden. They never made a bad album and just kept on getting better... yes, VH would be easy to choose. Of what's on the list, Allman Brothers, The Doors, Santana get acknowledgement.

My favorite is easily steely Dan.   In terms of the american band with greatest overall legacy it's easily the dead imo.   Their decision to allow shows to be recorded was a great marketing decision a
