I love Steve Hackett, and thoughl he tapped, he didn’t do it like Eddie did. EVH’s approach was wholly new. No one do what he did with an electric guitar. It wasn’t about the tapping - it was his entire melodic approach.

just listen to eruption.

Check out this article on guitarist Harvey Mandel here regarding two-handed tapping.

Have a listen to Mandel's 1973 album

, which has the two-handed tapping technique all over the recording.

Forum member custom55, would know who Mandel is from his guitar work on The Rolling Stones album Black and Blue. :)

So, we seem to agree that different guitarists had different approaches, each of them made it work for them, every one of them was individual ....... so, who the hell did invent tapping???? Edited by zepphead

too funny, i was thinking that its was developed by a drunk gypsy around a campfire. tried to find a video but came across the wiki article which suggest that may be the origin of tapping.

Tapping has existed in some form or another for centuries. Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840) used similar techniques on the violin, striking the string with a bouncing bow articulated by left-hand pizzicato. Paganini considered himself a better guitarist than violinist, and in fact wrote several compositions for guitar, most famously the "Grand Sonata for Violin and Guitar." His guitar compositions are rarely performed in modern times, though his violin compositions enjoy multiple performances. Some musicologists believe he wrote his 37 violin sonatas on guitar and then transcribed them for violin. Well known to frequent taverns, Paganini was likely exposed to gypsy guitar techniques from Romani, "gypsies." He preferred playing his guitar for tavern customers instead of audiences.[1]

a question for the players. it seems like tapping is easier on a electric then on a acoustic guitar? am i wrong or they are equal in difficulty?

Fake. Eddie VH invented the tapping technique.

Nope. You are wrong because Steve Hackett exists.

Hackett helped pioneer the two-handed tapping technique that EVH brough to fame later in the decade and claims that VH picked up the idea after seeing a Genesis concert in the mid 70's.

Whoa, Fridge, what's with your sig? It's about 50 uninterrupted miles/kilometers of characters, with some of them (for me, at least) running off the right side of the page.

Anybody else seeing the same thing?

Yep, had to block his signature, it made the threads he posted in too small to be readable.

Hackett:

"I'm the inventor of tapping on record," he says. "We haven't found anyone who tapped earlier than me, unless somebody did it in the 1930s, but I doubt it."

We RUSH nerds know this, but someone can let Steve Hackett know that the tapping, or "golpe" (Spanish for "hit") technique has a long tradition in flamenco music.

:P
