Five Bands That Epitomize The Music Of The 80's

If you could name just five bands whose music sums up the 1980's, which five would it be?

I was initially going to say two bands, but I don't think two bands could cut it.

Then I went with three, but that's not possible either.

Five should be somewhat sufficient. :)

uhhh...that is a difficult request, lol!

Off the top of my head?

The Police, Metallica, Def Leppard

I don't think that begins to cover things, lol

I know what you mean. Maybe I should have asked for 5.

I'll change it to 5

Agree with the Police, Journey, U2, and Bon Jovi. I would put Prince in 5th place (he had a band so that counts I think).

I would’ve put him in but I don’t think many think of him as a band despite him having had one then

JB was desperate to put Pink Floyd in.

I was expecting five Pink Floyds!

I've seen The Police mentioned a few times already. I think they're one of the best choices for this. They walked a fine line between the weirder edges of new wave and artsy kind of music and the heights of MTV pop, especially on Synchronicity. Not to mention they tried to fit in with the punk crowd at first.

I am very selective.

duck would put Judas Priest on a “Best Polka Bands of the 1950s“ list

I actually have, and they do have a few polka songs as well as a few poker songs!

Isn't that where Stewart met Sting - in a punk rock club?

What's more Polka? Living After Midnight or Painkiller?

I'm not sure actually, lol. I do seem to recall something about Stewart having played in jazz bands for a long time before forming The Police, and perhaps Sting doing the same. Also my dad tells me that Sting had wanted to be a singer songwriter at first, but went to one James Taylor show before deciding to ditch the guitar for a bass and join a punk band because he couldn't top that. The all have a very unusual musical pedigree for punk actually.
