For the life of me, I'll never understand how people can say something along the lines of, "I've never posted in SOCN, but all the people who post in there are . . . " It's a politics sub-forum. If you're not into politics, there's no reason for you to post in there. I have no interest in Porcupine Tree or Government Mule. You won't find me posting in threads dedicated to them. It's pretty simple. But if you've never been in there, how do you know it's all a bunch of . . . ?

I just knew there was something fundamentally wrong with you but I couldn't put my finger on it until now. :P

Its worse than you thought. Gabriel-era Genesis? Unlistenable.

HAHAHAHA!!!

RICK! I love you too man! I love Genesis until Hackett left.

This could be THREAD OF THE YEAR!!!

Sorry JARG!!!

EPIC!

Here`s a +1 to the bit about Hackett. I think his leaving Genesis had the biggest effect on their music (but a lot of stuff happened in progressive rock come 1978 that probably helped Rush reach the heights of success they did shortly thereafter).

Ha! 78!

I love you too. I get me man. "Hackett To Bits!" I get the pun. I majored in English. I'm a fool! LOL! A business man with an English Degree who is addicted to drumming and rock and roll.

No wonder my ex wife left me five years ago. It's ok. I'm happy!!!

"Hemispheres" is the greatest album ever conceived on the Earth.

I love Hemibeers too.

LOL!

Great screen name. It's me! LOL!

Hackett is still going strong and playing as well as ever. As for Genesis ... they went through 3 important phases -

Phase 1 with Gabriel & Hackett ---- Sublime

Phase 2 Gabriel gone but Hackett still there ---- Still good

Phase 3 No Gabriel or Hackett ---- Total Sh*te !!

Zepp!!

I've seen Hackett on his last two tours over here. He's amazing.

I am so pissed I missed the Wind And Wuthering gig. LOL!

"And Then Their Were Three?" Retire. LOL!

I admit I loved "Invisible Touch." I was a senior in high school. I saw that tour in Oakland Ca. Loved it.

I haven' seen Hackett live but it is on my to-do list - a super guitarist. I'm probably being a bit harsh on the later

Genesis line-up - they had a few good moments but generally had gone way too commercial in my view.

Yes!

I hope Hackett goes to Ireland when the world is safe again.

I am really weird my Mighty Zepp friend.

I love "Calling All Stations" The album without Phil Collins.

It's a masterpiece to my mind.

The drumming is off the charts. Oh the irony. LOL!!!

Check it out Zepp!!! TRUST ME!

I'll be honest Earl, I have never listened to 'Calling All Stations'!

But, to put things right, i will give it a spin with an open mind!

Yes Mighty Zepp!!

Please trust me.

It's so underrated yet so wonderful. "Shipwrecked" makes me tear up.

The music transcends through my soul buddy.

Probably going through a brutal divorce didn't help, but "Calling All Stations" is Epic.

Gary Moore Rules Zepp.

I am drinking a beer listening to the Colosseum II Japan cds.

I wanted to start a thread about Colossuem II but I am sure it would have been a dud.

Fusion, prog and Gary Moore. Essential discs. I am not crazy.

Just trying to spread the love of great music.

I know you get me.

It's nice to see someone else appreciate Colosseum II ... they never really got the credit they deserved for some incredible work - Moore's guitar

work is off the scale! I bought the albums at the time (mid 70s) purely because i followed Gary Moore's work as he was a local boy made good.

Since I never joined SOCN, I have a very high IQ!

It's a pun.

IQ is an incredible progressive rock band. They are better now than they were in the 80's and 90's. JMO

You amaze me Earl! ... never thought IQ would have been listened to on your side of the pond!

AS you rightly say, they are way better now!! I have all their stuff but the last 3 albums are particularly good!

I'm blasting "Wardance" right now. A a masterpiece.

I can't wait to go Ireland one year. With a woman or without, I going.

I hope we meet.

You know I'm consistent.

Hahaha!

Treeduck and JB are my brothers. Well now Zepp! You are my brother!!! Hahaha!!

It's amazing how much crap I used to get on here for being me.

But forget the past!!!

I just try to bring music to this forum. It's all archived. Pat Treeduck is also like me. Always bringing new music or forgotten bands to the forefront.

I love IQ! I have all of their cds. Albums on my iPhone.

My IQ is 21.12. lol

I love "Frequency." 2010

"The Road To Bones." Epic.

But their new one is mind-blowing.... "Resistance." What a fukking pun for SOCN. LOL!

Basically, people on the far ends of the spectrum -- either end -- seem to have the most trouble in a mixed political forum like ours. Everyone else seems to do just fine. And we're seeing a microcosm of that in this thread.

Interesting you mention "the spectrum" here. Because the one in the real world looks like this:

OP6yrOX.jpg

Which, as I've shown before, here are where the 2020 US Candidates lined up on that spectrum:

daROaF2.png

But given that, specifically Bernie Sanders, is seen as an extremist, fringe left in SOCN, and Joe Biden is consider left and seen (correctly) as an authoritarian, you have to conclude that SOCN's prevailing group political spectrum looks something like this:

JqTYLfs.jpg

And so yes, if, according to the SOCN zeitgeist, you fall on an extreme end of the spectrum on the last graph, you will have a difficult time in SOCN.

And to be fair to SOCN, this is close to what mainstream US sees as the political spectrum. Although mainstream US cuts off the bottom third of the graph entirely.

HCuW1qZ.jpg

I speak with non-Americans on a daily basis. They are always flabbergasted at American politics. Since we're outside of SOCN, I am speaking mostly to non-Americans when I say all this. Because it starts to shine light on what is going on in the US.

Bernie Sanders would be a centrist, slightly left candidate in most European countries. And on the LIbertarian side. But in the US, he's see as far left hippie. In SOCN, he is vilified as a communist. And this is why.

Edited to make better graphs.

The longer I thought about it, the more I think that this is the more accurate compass for SOCN:

JGD7L5N.jpg

There's a strange bubbling that happens where some left libertarian ideas are accepted, but seen as "fairly left of center" ideas when really, they are just fairly close to centrist, slightly on the left side. Usually these ideals handle already established, left wing/centerist aspects of American life that are taken for granted.

So I tried to warp the graph so that where Bernie Sanders is on the graph, center left, is clearly perceived as upper right, and where I personally would be, moderate lower left, is seen as extremist.

The ultimate point here is that, when the moderators and regulars say that they get along with everyone who "isn't an extremist", their version of extreme is very warped. Literally warped, that's the Photoshop tool I used to do this, the warp tool.

Please explore Pendragon.

No one on this forum gives a shit about this band. It's hilarious.

I'm an American Boy in love with neo classical prog.

I must have been dropped on my head as a rushhead baby.

The new Pendragon album is their best in 17 years. The album is called "Love Over Fear." Go figure.

Remember the last Marillion album? F.E.A.R.

FUCKK EVERYONE AND RUN!!!!

Great record. I saw the tour here in San Francisco.

I love Rothery. I've met the boys in Marillion a few times.

I partied with FISH once on his tour bus after the "Sunset Of Empire" Tour. FISH is a hoot! I LOVE HIM!

Humans hate FISH. They love "H" more. I want to vomit.

I met "H" once backstage with the guys. He's a werido introvert.

Rothery? A gentleman.

Mark Kelly? Wonderful.

Pete? Incredible man. I talked with him for like 20 minutes!!! Also on a cell phone!!

Ian. Quiet but cool.

I can't stand "H."

He ruined the band.

I do like "Season's End."

"Holidays In Eden." Prog pop brilliance.

"Brave" Great.

"Afraid Of Sunlight?" WTF??????

No wonder EMI dropped Marillion into the dumpster. LOL! JUNK!

I should write a book Zepp. So many stories. I've met them all buddy. Well almost. lol

I think you would like Riverside Zepp.

Hehehe I do Earl!!! They are a very popular band in the prog scene here ... a tragedy when Piotr Grudziński died suddenly. Wasteland was a bittersweet album without him

but i played it soooo many times. It will be interesting to hear the new album when it comes out with the new guitarist.

You are preaching to the converted Earl!! Whilst in my younger days i focused on heavy rock (and still love it), I have always loved Prog in all its forms.

I remember when Script for a Jester's Tear came out in '83 all the trendy music mags like NME slagged it because it wasn't punk/new wave ..... that's what made me

buy it! I loved all the Fish era Marillion stuff ..... I struggle a wee bit with Marillion without Fish - I like some things and find other things a bit dull. Rothery did a lovely solo album a couple of years back though.

Apart from the obvious 'old' Prog bands like Genesis, Tull, Yes, Floyd, Gentle Giant, Camel, there are also some not so obvious old ones like Focus, PFM, Fruupp, Caravan, Nektar, Eloy, Argent etc etc.

Of the so called wave of 'neo-prog' bands .... some of the bands i listen to are (in no particular order!)

Marillion

Arena

IQ

Pendragon

Sylvan

Galahad

Riverside

Magenta

Wobbler

Magic Pie

Gin Lady (formerly Black Bonzo) ..... to name but a few!

"Script for a Jester's Tear"? Is that real? Because it sounds like a better, more pitch perfect parody of the archetypal prog song than anything that the legendary writers of Spinal Tap did for metal.

Script for a Jester's Tear kick started the whole neo-prog scene inspiring musicians who actually wanted to play their instruments .... a real two fingers up to all the trendy music press of the time who

thought that punk had killed the so called 'dinasaurs of rock'. That didn't happen .... probably because people eventually realised that learning 3 chords, playing a simplistic 2 min song loudly and fast, does not

a great record make. So.... is Script for a Jester's Tear real??? .... bloody right it is!!

I asked 1-0-0-1-0-0-1 that if I joined The Sense O'Clock News and made a comment of that particular subforum smelling like 'cow dung', would I be banned for that?

His reply is that he doesn't see me as someone participating and engaging in political discussion, and I had to agree.

This thread is illustrating something interesting, I think.

Look at the people who are participating here. The majority are being diplomatic, giving an honest assessment of what SOCN is like for them without mentioning or plugging their position on the political spectrum, or bad-mouthing someone else's position, and they're also cracking jokes, talking about music, and generally not taking themselves too seriously. Those people are either SOCN regulars who have had little to no trouble over the years discussing heated political issues, or people who don't yet have SOCN access but would probably do okay in there, if they were interested. These people are easy to identify if you go back and read the whole thread.

And then we have a few others who are also SOCN regulars, but they're complaining how hard it is to hang out in there, how oppressive, mean-spirited and partisan the above-mentioned regulars are, and they generally have that no-compromise "My team against the enemy team!" outlook, as if there are only two teams to pick from. They're often closed-minded and are only interested in lecturing/schooling/judging or trying to catch members of the other team in a "gotcha" moment. They don't do quite as well in SOCN. They may last in there for several years, but that time isn't exactly productive -- for them or anyone else. Those few people, one could argue, take themselves way too seriously, and they are also easy to identify once you go back and read here.

Basically, people on the far ends of the spectrum -- either end -- seem to have the most trouble in a mixed political forum like ours. Everyone else seems to do just fine. And we're seeing a microcosm of that in this thread.

I'm far right and never have a problem because I allow others to think as they like.
