Aftermath

The Rolling Stones #2

Between the Buttons

A Bigger Bang

Emotional Rescue

Voodoo Lounge

Dirty Work

Their Satanic Majesty’s Request

Undercover

Dirty Work and Undercover seem to be the unfavoured albums for most people. What's the problem with these two?

They’re actually ok records, just seem a little uninspired to me.

Kind of seemed like “we have to make a Stones record”.

I confess I need to go back and give them a listen as it has been awhile.

Yeah, those two albums are very uninspired. They just put them out to fulfill contract obligations it seems. Mick and Keith were hating each other at the time as well. They had been together for so long without a break there was a lot of friction between them and a break was needed. The songwriting on those two albums suffered because of it. There's still some good songs. One Hit To The Body is a favorite of mine.

After a couple year break they came back with Steel Wheels which I thought was a pretty good comeback album.

I really like “Steel Wheels”.

That album was driven by Keith’s efforts.

I read a review somewhere when it came out that it was basically a Keith Richards solo record with Mick as guest vocalist.

Though I wouldn’t go that far, you can hear what the reviewer meant.

'Almost Hear You Sigh' was written during the sessions for Keith's solo album Talk Is Cheap with Steve Jordan, which then became modified with new lyrics by Mick for Steel Wheels.

From Rolling Stone magazine here.

“Mixed Emotions” from Steel Wheels really has a Winos feel to it.

Yeah, sure. One thing rubs off on the other. You know, you get used to working one way and it’s quite possible that the idea for “Mixed Emotions” I’d already written for the Winos, and some things get left over.

I completely agree and couldn’t say it better.

I love “Talk is Cheap”.

I have my original vinyl and also the MFSL CD version.

It really is a great Rock and Roll record.

I never thought about it before but there are a few songs on that album like Sad Sad Sad, Terrifying and Continental Drift that with a different guitar tone could slip into the metal category.

My favourite band of all time. I have seen them many times since the mid 70's including the infamous concert for the blind in Oshawa, part of Keith's settlement for heroin possession in Toronto. My favourite album is Exile On Main Street. After that it is tough. So many masterpieces. At the next level I would include: Sticky Fingers, Some Girls, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Goat's Head Soup and It's Only Rock and Roll. I am a huge fan of the Mick Taylor era obviously. Plus during this era they were at their height of their performance. From Madison Square Gardens shows captured in one of the best live lp's ever Get Yer Ya ya's Out to the Altamount disaster and the crazy, debauchery of those late 60's / early 70's tours, they epitomized Rock and Roll.

I really like Steel Wheels as well. I saw the Stones on that tour- support act was Living Colour. Vivid was their big album at that time. Great show.

Most memorable song that the Stones did the night I saw them (30+ years ago, and based on my recollection- I was 16 at the time) was Play With Fire.

I cannot possibly rank all of the Stones albums- but sticky Fingers and Exile are at the top. Let it Bleed, Beggars Banquet- definitely. I also rate It’s Only Rock n’ Roll and Black and Blue higher than most people seem to. Some Girls is also great.

Here's a question, which album do you need to get in order to secure the well known song Jumpin' Jack Flash in your collection?

Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2)

What about the collection from the mid 70's Metamorphosis?

I just gave it a spin. I give it a [6/10]. The Who's Odds and Sods is much better outtake compilation.

I never thought about it before but there are a few songs on that album like Sad Sad Sad, Terrifying and Continental Drift that with a different guitar tone could slip into the metal category.

The heavy metal influence is from Ronnie Wood.

The song 'Too Tough' from Undercover, has a heavy metal vibe in it from Woods guitar soloing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpR03ixjbNk

Also Keith Richards solo song '999' from Main Offender, has a heavy metal vibe to it as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHX2CJCcXo4

Also the type of guitar influences the sound. Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood used Music Man Silhouette guitars on the Steel Wheels Tour and also for the solo Main Offender Tour. They have a different vibe than Fenders and Gibsons.

I've put this one my list because I wouldn't feel right unless I bought a full-on record company cash-in greatest hits collection. :16ton:

And this one even includes the extra tracks from other record company cash-in collections like Grrr! and Forty Licks.

I notice you have Undercover and Dirty Work at the bottom, that seems to be the general consensus. The 80's always seem to be the bottom of the barrel for most long standing rock bands. I'm sure I'll enjoy them though. :d13:

Dirty Work

So are all your early copies the US versions?

I notice you have Undercover and Dirty Work at the bottom, that seems to be the general consensus. The 80's always seem to be the bottom of the barrel for most long standing rock bands. I'm sure I'll enjoy them though. :d13:

Yes, although in addition to all their studio albums (and most of their live ones) I do have Hot Rocks and The London Years, I'm not sure if those were originally US or UK releases.

Undercover and Dirty Work have some good songs on them (Tie You Up and Winning Ugly, for example) but the band hated each other during those years and it comes across on the material. They seem to be just going through the motions. Don't get me wrong, for most bands they would be the high point of their discography, but not the Stones.
