KK'S PRIEST's Debut Album 'Sounds Unbelievable,' Says TIM 'RIPPER' OWENS

Tim "Ripper" Owens says that he has completed recording the vocals for the debut album from KK'S PRIEST, his new collaboration with founding JUDAS PRIEST guitarist K.K. Downing and ex-PRIEST drummer Les Binks. The band, which pays homage to Downing's past, is rounded out by guitarist A.J. Mills (HOSTILE) and bassist Tony Newton (VOODOO SIX).

During an appearance on Wednesday's (March 11) episode of SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation", Owens stated about the progress of the recording sessions for the KK'S PRIEST LP: "It's going great. I've posted pictures of myself with K.K. in the studio. I got my vocals done. It sounds unbelievable. It's gonna be a really great record. Obviously, we can't talk too much about it right now, but it's really good. We have a really good time.

"I'm excited," he continued. "The vocals came out great. It's a lot of high stuff, a lot of aggressive stuff and a lot of classic-sounding metal. So it's gonna be great."

According to Owens, Downing is focused on making a killer album before going out and performing the material live. "He's more excited about putting this record out than he even is touring," Tim said. "He's excited about playing these songs live. Every time we talk in the studio, when I'm doing something, he's going, 'The crowd's gonna love that.' That's his mentality.

"We're not shooting for mediocrity; we're shooting for the top," Owens added. "The biggest thing was getting this record [done]."

Tim went on to say that KK'S PRIEST will not schedule any dates before the release of the band's album. "No shows are gonna happen without putting this record out," he explained.

Gotta give KK props for focusing on new tunes instead of just living off old stuff. I hope that with tours being down for a while, Priest will do the same and try to get their Firepower follow-up released before 2020 ends. We really don't need another oldies tour first. Edited by TexMike

I doubt they get it completely finished before next year, more likely it won't be out until late 2021 at the earliest.

Maybe KK's sudden album announcement will light a fire under Halford and co though and they speed things up a bit. According to them they finished recording Firepower in June 2017 and yet it wasn't released until March 2018. Did they really need to wait 9 months before they released it?

You're probably right, although they could potentially have extra free time if this stoppage of live shows continues for months. After the great response to Firepower and the fact they aren't getting any younger, I don't understand why they're not focused on recording again while the creative fire is still hot. Nobody really cares about a 50th anniversary tour. The show closest to me is selling VERY poorly. Ian has said the band formed in 1969, so technically that anniversary has already passed anyway. And now they're gonna let a guy who "retired" 10 years ago (and has since talked crap about them) get his album out first. I don't get it.

Yeah I don't get the whole 50th anniversary tour thing. And I don't know why they take so long to make these albums. They used all of 2016 to write songs for Firepower and got demos done around September-November time. They then took until June 2017 to get it recorded, but then another 9 months went by before it was released. So they're taking more than 2 years to write and record an album these days. Going by that timetable the next one won't be released until early 2022, and that's if they can speed up a bit to fit the tour in somewhere.

Now more than ever, we need new kickass music to get into! I guess the good thing about having two Priests now is that there's competition to get some out sooner.

Clearly KK has had music he's been working on ready to go, probably from the last two years since the arguments with the band started after Firepower was released, but also maybe from the last 10 years or before that, maybe even the 80's. The last full album he worked on was Nostradamus and that was recorded in 2008.

I wonder who they'll get to produce it? Or maybe Downing will do it himself with some engineers? Roy Z is a possibility he produced Angel of Retribution so he's worked with KK before and he's also worked more recently with Ripper Owens on the Spirits of Fire album, it was Roy Z who put that project together in fact. He did work with Rob on the Halford albums but the last one was back in 2010.

They are working on their own schedule now. They got the record done, then took a bunch of time off to do whatever. Released Firepower when they decided they were ready to tour.

Yeah I suppose you can't argue with that, it's their band, their story, their way. I can still complain about it though, that's my privilege.

"Hello KK'S PRIEST fans around the world. These are challenging and life-altering times for us all and I hope you and your families are all safe, at home, and comfortable. I am fortunate to have some of the best fans in the world. Your support and love is what allows and inspires us to create music and tour the world.

"I have always considered you as part of my large extended family, and as I always say, family comes first! We all have to do everything we can to ensure that our families, friends, neighbours, work colleagues remain safe, healthy and comfortable. Together we will survive these uncertain few months, and we cannot wait to get out on the road and bring our music to you all in every corner of the globe.

"In these times of uncertainty, I just wanted to give you an update from the studio. We are moving ahead full steam ahead on the new album. Thankfully Ripper finished all the tracks and got home to Ohio safely before the travel restrictions started, and I have to say I am so excited — his vocals are classic Ripper/PRIEST — and then some!

"This album is coming together so naturally and is already sounding incredible — I can't wait for you to hear these songs — and I hope it's not too long before we can let you hear the first track released by Explorer1… so stay tuned!

"Anyone that registers on our official website will get first access to news and music — so head on over to www.kkspriest.com and put in your email!

"Thank you so much for your support over the years and please stay safe and keep on rocking!

I'd much rather see this band than the current Judas Priest. The other guitar player is nowhere near the calibre of Glenn Tipton at his best, but in that genre - who is? I'm not sure how good the two guitar players currently in Priest are; I just wouldn't want to see a version of the band without KK or Glenn.

Richie Faulkner is on twitter and facebook, I'm surprised no Priest fans have asked him about KK's Priest yet. He must be deleting those comments under instruction.

Probably not him directly, an admin of their page maybe. Richie seems like a cool straight shooter and I doubt he'd avoid a question about this. He's said a lot of complimentary things about KK in the past, including about his recent gigs. They're all bound to be asked about it sooner or later. Just wish they'd use this spare time to get their own album finished. It's nice that Rob's leather is clean now, but what we really need to get through this is new Priest tunes!
