When Judas Priest were in Vancouver on their "Painkiller Tour", I've seen it at Pacific Coliseum. I bought, and have the same tourbook as the photos posted of what it looks like from the front cover, Glenn Tipton, and Rob Halford. I haven't read Rob Halford's "Confess" autobiography. Glenn Tipton’s ‘sharp ideas’ have inspired an ‘enormous’ stack of new Judas Priest songs

Judas Priest hail guitarist Glenn Tipton’s contributions to the follow-up to Firepower in the new issue of Metal Hammer

Judas Priest have an ‘enormous’ stack of new songs written for the follow-up to 2018’s Firepower, and guitarist Glenn Tipton has been central to the writing process, the band reveal in their cover story interview in the new issue of Metal Hammer.

Rob Halford’s metal gods are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, and Priest fans will soon have their own reason to celebrate as the band are deep into the writing of what will be their nineteenth studio album.

“We started the year prepping the next Judas Priest metal masterpiece,” Rob Halford says. “We had one massive writing session together and we’ve got an enormous amount of material stacked up, which is really thrilling after the glorious response we had to Firepower.”

“It’s gonna be good,” insists drummer Scott Travis. “Rob’s always excited about new music, which is great, because he’s such a creative guy and when you are that creative, naturally you never rest on your laurels. You always want to do something new and get it out there.”

Though inevitably delayed by restrictions imposed to combat the spread of the COVID pandemic, the band’s writing process for the new album had remained essentially the same, says guitarist Richie Faulkner.

“We compile all our ideas and get together and throw them in the pot and see what sticks,” he explains, “then see what lights up the room, see what Rob grabs hold of. It might be a riff that Rob really gets his teeth into that inspires a lyric or an intro, verse or chorus and suddenly you’ve got the nucleus of a song.”

Priest fans will be thrilled to learn that guitarist Glenn Tipton remains as deeply immersed in the process as ever.

“Parkinson’s is a degenerative disease,” says Richie Faulkner, acknowledging the illness with which Tipton was diagnosed in 2008, “so it gets steadily worse and you have to keep taking medication to keep it at bay. But the great thing with Glenn is that we’ve still got his mind. His mind’s still sharp and his ideas are still sharp. I’ll tell you what, man, I might have a riff or a part or a section and I don’t know what it is, but it lacks something. Glenn will say, ‘Try this’ and I’ll think, ‘That’s not gonna work. You’re out of your mind…’ and then I’ll try it and see that it’s the exact turnaround or riff or part that it needed to make it Judas Priest.”

“If he’s having a tough day on guitar one day, he’s still in there with us, coming up with ideas – almost like a producer role. And he’s on some of the tracks so far already. But if he’s having a bad day with the guitar, he can just throw out his ideas and honestly, that’s what makes the difference sometimes.”

Andy Sneap, the former Sabbat/Hell guitarist who co-produced Firepower with Tom Allom, has been once again been tapped to fill in for Tipton on Priest’s upcoming live performances.

I just started Rob's book today and so far am really enjoying it. It's written in a relaxed, easy-to-read style that feels like he's just sitting there talking to you. I immediately jumped to the end to see if he mentioned the feuding with KK or the 'other Priest', but he doesn't. I get the impression Rob really prefers to stay above mudslinging.

His memory isn't perfect as he cites Jawbreaker as being off SFV, but it sounds like he drank so much during those years we should be thankful he remembers anything. Obviously a huge part of the book is his turmoil and sadness about being in the closet. Look to be some good stories about meeting and partying with other rockers and celebrities. Looking forward to reading the rest in detail.

When the libraries eventually re-open I'll read this one. I was going to buy it but apparently there's not enough about Priest in it which is what I'm really interested in. BTW, does he mention what happened when his boyfriend shot himself?

JUDAS PRIEST singer Rob Halford spoke to Mark Strigl and John "Ostronomy" Ostrosky of Talking Metal about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band's follow-up to "Firepower" album. Released in March 2018, "Firepower" was the second LP to feature guitarist Richie Faulkner, who was selected to fill the void left by founding guitarist K.K. Downing following his exit in 2011.

"We had some great writing sessions at the start of this year back in the U.K. at Glenn's [Tipton, guitar] setup, his studio," Rob said (see video below). "And, man, it was boundless opportunities that were coming out of those writing sessions. We did a lot of demos. I've got pretty much an [album's worth] of [new] JUDAS PRIEST [material] on this phone right now. And it's just amazing.

"I've gotta give a shoutout to the fans, as we always do," he continued. "We can't be who we are without you guys looking after us and giving us the inspiration and the motivation. Because we came off that 'Firepower' tour so energized, and we still were feeling that when we started the writing sessions early this year, and we got a lot of work done.

"On average, we usually have three or four big writing sessions of a month or so at a time. And so we got the first one down, and we've got a lot of material. It's incredibly fierce. I think that energy was just being channeled, especially from Richie. Some of his riffs and some of the core of the songs, they're absolutely lethal. I feel textures of the 'Painkiller' experience in some of the songs, and the classic elements again. It'll have its own legs, like they all do — they've all got their own character. And I think whatever this album is called and whenever it's released, it'll be another great metal milestone for JUDAS PRIEST."

"Firepower" was recorded by British producer Andy Sneap, the band's longtime collaborator Tom Allom and engineer Mike Exeter (BLACK SABBATH), and Rob said that he would be thrilled to collaborate with all three again.

"It was a great experience working with Andy and Tom Allom, because they have two different approaches as producers," Halford said. "And we didn't even know if that was gonna work when we started to think about putting them together. But what a great idea that was, and they made some special things happen in terms of production. Me personally, I'm happy to replicate that thing over again, because I think we just touched the surface of it with the 'Firepower' production team, with Mike Exeter as well, who had just come off the SABBATH '13' album. So, anything can happen. But I just feel it's gonna be another very, very extra-strong record when we finally get it made."

I watched this last night. Pete always has good stuff on his channel.

Nothing new revealed, but a good interview. I was surprised he went there with the KK question, but Rob very diplomatically sidestepped it. Sounded almost like a 100% confirmation on Andy touring again, but not quite. And he STILL thinks they'll be doing shows with Ozzy. I guess he hasn't actually seen Ozzy lately.

I used to think I was the only one who watched that channel! Now there's loads of people on TRF watching! There's even Blabbermouth commenters who watch it!

Pete is always worth listening to. A true fan of all things rock and metal ..... and it shows!

This was a pretty good interview with Rob - he was relaxed and articulate.

I agree, the Ozzy shows are optimistic to say the least, I hope they happen and Ozzy can pull things round, but it doesn't seem great.

I did another thread like this when Firepower was being written and recorded. Check it out, it's a long one though.

ROB HALFORD Is 'So Proud' Of Songs That Have Been Written For Next JUDAS PRIEST Album

During an appearance on the latest episode of the "In The Trenches With Ryan Roxie" podcast, JUDAS PRIEST singer spoke about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the follow-up to 2018's "Firepower" album. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "I'm old school. We had one great big writing session last March for this new record that we're still working on. And what I mean by that is Glenn [Tipton, guitar] and Richie [Faulkner, guitar] and myself at Glenn's beautiful studio. And that's the way I personally write. I'm very spontaneous in my writing. Even before the lyrics and the melodies start, I'm there with Glenn and Richie, and I'm inspired and motivated by what they're doing…. What I'm saying is as far as the place that all musicians enjoy — being creative, being in a room with your bandmates and making a song and going, 'Oh, man. I can't wait for the fans to hear this.'

"'Firepower' was a beautiful achievement for us; I'm very, very proud of that record," he continued. "And, of course, when you set a bar, you always kind of go, 'Oh, now we've gotta try to knock one out of the park with the follow-up to 'Firepower'.' That can be a danger. I think you can get very easily misdirected by focusing too much on expectation. We've been making so long, we never second-guessed the final outcome; we've always played from the heart, from the gut.

"These [new PRIEST] songs that I've got with me, they're so good. I'm so happy and so proud of what we've got so far, and there's so much more to come."

Halford also confirmed that PRIEST will reunite with the "Firepower" production team consisting of British producer Andy Sneap, the band's longtime collaborator Tom Allom and engineer Mike Exeter (BLACK SABBATH).

"That was a great experiment," Rob said about the "Firepower" recording experience. "We didn't even know it was gonna work. Tom's classic old-school metal. Andy is from more recent times. And Mike, of course, just came [from doing] the '13' album with [bLACK] SABBATH; he had done a lot of work with SABBATH. So there's three heads working together. And we thought, 'This is either gonna be a trainwreck or something glorious,' and it turned out to be something glorious. So we're gonna at least recreate those same production moments. But having said that, it is all about the songs, and right now, the songs feel really, really strong."

None. There's nothing even that close. The last date in Hamilton, Ontario could work since it's only a 45 minute trip over the Canadian border for me. But Canada is not handling the pandemic too well right now. So, traveling there might not be able to happen by then. Plus, going up to Canada in November might result in getting caught stranded in a snowstorm.

What would be some better locations? What's the ideal gig location for you for a Priest-level gig these days?

Here it would be our local amphitheater. They played that on the last tour with Deep Purple. So, I'm not entirely sure they could fill it up without another well known name as a co-headliner. I'm guessing the 50th anniversary tag would entice some people to go. The venue I saw them on the Epitaph and Redeemer tours is a place called the Main Street Armory in Rochester, NY. Rochester is about an hour drive from me and it's pretty easy to get to as it's a straight trip down the interstate and there's no border crossing bullshit to worry about. The venue is great too. A wide open general admission place that can fit somewhere around the six or seven thousand range. Perfect for a band like Priest who probably can't fill up a bigger arena or amphitheater by themselves in the US. But can easily sell out a midsize place.

Very happy they're going forward with this since I bought tix for the Cedar Park show the minute they went on sale (and have been patiently waiting the last year and a half). I was afraid they'd bump it to 2022 like a lot of bands are still doing. Most of those dates are rescheduled and only a handful are new shows.

I'd still have rather they finished the new album first, but looking forward to a live show and hope they deliver the goods with a kickass and deep setlist.
