Your Favorite Neil Lyrics

Wind

In my hair

Shifting and drifting

Mechanical music

Adrenaline surge...

Well-weathered leather

Hot metal and oil

The scented country air

Sunlight on chrome

The blur of the landscape

Every nerve aware

Also this:

Everyone would gather

On the twenty-fourth of May

Sitting in the sand

To watch the fireworks display

Dancing fires on the beach

Singing songs together

Though it's just a memory, some memories last forever

And this:

You move me

You move me

With your buildings and your eyes

Autumn woods and winter skies

You move me

You move me

Open sea and city lights

Busy streets and dizzy heights

You call me

You call me

Who's come to slay the dragon

Come to watch him fall ...

Those are indeed lovely lyrics, but they're not Neil's.

That one was Geddy, right?

Yes.

Computerized clinic

For superior cynics

Who dance to a synthetic band

In their own image

Their world is fashioned

No wonder they don't understand

Art as expression, not as market campaigns

Will still capture our imaginations

-

They say there are strangers who threaten us

Our immigrants and infidels

They say there is strangeness to danger us

In our theaters and bookstore shelves

That those who know what's best for us

Must rise and save us from ourselves

Quick to judge

Quick to anger

Slow to understand

Ignorance and prejudice

And fear walk hand in hand

-

All that you can do is wish them well

Even if you're going through hell, just keep on going

-

Nowhere is the dreamer

Or the misfit so alone

-

No hero in your tragedy

No daring in your escape

No salutes for your surrender

Nothing noble in your fate

Christ, what have you done?

-

Hit you in a soft place

A melody so sweet

A strong and simple beat

That you can dance to

Watch his every move

(Superconductor)

Orchestrate illusions

(Superconductor)

Watch his every move

(Superconductor)

Hoping you'll believe

Designing to deceive

That's entertainment

I recently rediscovered the Presto album, and there was one track that particularly stood out to me: The Pass

Static on your frequency

Electrical storm in your veins

Raging at unreachable glory

Straining at invisible chains

And now you're trembling on a rocky ledge

Staring down into a heartless sea

Can't face life on a razor's edge

Nothing's what you thought it would be

All of us get lost in the darkness

Dreamers learn to steer by the stars

All of us do time in the gutter

Dreamers turn to look at the cars

Turn around and turn around and turn around

Turn around and walk the razor's edge

Don't turn your back

And slam the door on me

...

It's not as if this barricade

Blocks the only road

It's not as if you're all alone

In wanting to explode

Someone set a bad example

Made surrender seem all right

The act of a noble warrior

Who lost the will to fight

...

And now you're trembling on a rocky ledge

Staring down into a heartless sea

Done with life on a razor's edge

Nothing's what you thought it would be

...

No hero in your tragedy

No daring in your escape

No salutes for your surrender

Nothing noble in your fate

Christ, what have you done?

Such a fantastic song. Everything is just put together perfectly in it. I seem to recall an interview or something where Neil said it was one of the hardest songs for him to write the lyrics to since he never experienced suicidal thoughts before. I think he ended up nailing it pretty well though.

Different Strings is a favorite of mine, both musically and lyrically.

Fantastic song, one of my favourites.

I also love

Summer's going fast

Nights growing colder

Children growing up

Old friends growing older

Freeze this moment

A little bit longer

Make each sensation

A little bit stronger

Experience slips away

Experience slips away

The innocence slips away

These will just make me cry again.

I recently embarked on a crafting journey to look at all the lyrics, read them like journal entries, or listen to the music and not have to open every little CD (if they even include the lyrics) and better album size coverage. An at-a-glance understanding of not just him, but the band.

No matter how often you have read them, the Anthem section is like a book, you just click and read.

Awesome!

All I know is that sometimes you have to be wary

Of a miracle too good to be true

All I know is that sometimes the truth is contrary

Everything in life you thought you knew

All I know is that sometimes you have to be wary

‘Cause sometimes the target is you

All I know is that memory can be too much to carry

Striking down like a bolt from the blue

My two favorite lines that I have quoted most in my life are:

If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. - To me this says so much.

I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend - I know most people love this song, and at it's core I do as well. I always felt people came to Rush because of these songs and missed out on so much more.

Prime Mover has always been a favorite:

From a point on the compass

To magnetic north

The point of the needle moving back and forth

From the point of entry-

Until the candle is burned

The point of departure is not to return
