MANHATTAN PROJECT

Imagine a time when it all began

In the dying days of a war

A weapon - that would settle the score

Whoever found it first

Would be sure to do their worst -

They always had before...

Imagine a man where it all began

A scientist pacing the floor

In each nation - always eager to explore

To build the best big stick

To turn the winning trick -

But this was something more...

The big bang - took and shook the world

Shot down the rising sun

the end was begun - it would hit everyone

When the chain reaction was done

The big shots - try to hold it back

Fools try to wish it away

The hopeful depend on a world without end

Whatever the hopeless may say

Imagine a place where it all began

They gathered from across the land

To work in the secrecy of the desert sand

All of the brightest boys

To play with the biggest toys -

More than they bargained for...

Imagine a man when it all began

The pilot of "Enola Gay"

Flying out of the shockwave on that August day

All the powers that be, and the course of history,

Would be changed for evermore...

THE GARDEN

In this one of many possible worlds, all for the best, or some bizarre test?

It is what it is - and whatever

Time is still the infinite jest

The arrow files when you dream, the hours tick away - the cells tick away

The Watchmaker keeps to his schemes

The hours tick away - they tick away

The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect

So hard to earn, so easily burned

In the fullness of time

A garden to nurture and protect

In the rise and the set of the sun

'Til the stars go spinning - spinning 'round the night

It is what it is - and forever

Each moment a memory in flight

The arrow flies while you breathe, the hours tick away - the cells tick away

The Watchmaker has time up his sleeve

The hours tick away - they tick away

The treasure of a life is a measure of love and respect

The way you live, the gifts that you give

In the fullness of time

It's the only return that you expect

The future disappears into memory

With only a moment between

Forever dwells in that moment

Hope is what remains to be seen

You know were having good days and we hope their gonna last our future still looks brighter than our past we feel no need to worry no reason to be sad our memories remind us maybe road life's not so bad

people who judge without a measure of mercy, all the victims who will never learn, even the lost ones you can only give up on, even the ones who will make you burn, thank your stars you're not that way turn your back and walk away don't even pause and ask them why turn around and say goodbye.

Your meters may overload you can rest at the side of the road you can miss a stride but nobody gets a free ride more than high performance more than just a spark more just the bottom line or a lucky shot in the dark in the long run from first to last the peak is never passed something always fires that light that gets in your eye one moments high and glory rolls on by like a streak of lightning that flashes and fades in the summer sky.

The earth beneath us starts to tremble with the spreading of a low black cloud a thunderous roar shakes the air like the whole world exploding, Scorching blast of golden fire as it slowly leaves the ground tears away with a mighty force the air is shot by that awesome sound.

What did care the fool that I was little by little I burned, sometimes there might be a flaw but how pretty the picture was back then, What did I do the fool that I was to profit from youthful mistakes, it's shameful to tell how often I fell in love with illusions again.

We can walk our road together if our goals are all the same, we can run alone and free if we pursue a different aim, let the truth of love be lighted let the love of truth shine clear, sensibility, armed with sense and liberty with the heart and mind united in a single perfect sphere

I've collected some of my favorite lyrics by Neil. I realize now that there is an undercurrent of a dark undertone here.

As with other great philosophers throughout Western history, thanks for keeping it real, Neil.

I miss you dearly already. How is it you've affected me like no other?

This is the last song I played tonight. Last album, last song, last of a career. F-ing wow, dude.

I in general find his lyrics to be a source of inspiration and realism. Set to music that rocks my ass off. Beat that. I have dealt with physical problems for a while and find Rush to be a source of positivity and energy and hope.

Funny, I thought they were just a band that rocks.

I listened to Snakes And Arrows a lot during the issues I had back then. As well as some Vapor Trails and Counterparts. It would bolster me during my gym workouts.

I had more severe problems in 2018 which almost killed me. Twice, apparently. I dealt with the pain of bandaging while listening to S&A and clicking the pain meds button... just hanging on. We can only bow to the here and now or be broken down blow by blow.

I had to put on my bravest face.

I didn't know Neil was facing his own personal hell. I wish I could have offered him some solace like he did me. He didn't just retire. He had literally given all he could.

Too many hands on my time

Too many feelings

Too many things on my mind

When I leave I don't know what I'm hoping to find

When I leave I don't know what I'm leaving behind

Listening to that now...

I turn my face to the sun

Close my eyes,

Let my defenses down

All those wounds

That I can't get unwound

I let my past go too fast

No time to pause

If I could slow it all down

Like some captain,

Whose ship runs aground

I can wait until the tide comes around

"Analog Kid" --

The boy lies in the grass, unmoving

staring at the sky

His mother starts to call him

as a hawk goes soaring by.

The boy pulls down his baseball cap

and covers up his eyes.

"Freewill" --

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice

If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice

You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill

I will choose a path that's clear; I will choose free will.

So important to me to my evolving self-concept from middle school on . . .

Such a tangle of them in my mind, but here are my two absolute favourite individual couplets:

I see the hands of men arise with hungry minds and open eyes.

Pavements may teem with intense energy but the city is calm in this violent sea.

It's cold comfort to the ones without it

To know how they struggled, how they suffered about it

If their lives were exotic and strange

They would likely have gladly exchanged them for something a little more plain

Maybe something a little more sane

We each pay a fabulous price

For our visions of paradise

But a spirit with a vision

Is a dream with a mission

Well as I am more than certain many of us will have a hard time choosing what exactly is our "favorite" Lyric of our beloved and departed Professor. I know regarding my favorite(s) it's like me being on a carousel and where ever it stops there are multiple (& multiple) choices.

Today my favorites are:

POLARIZE ME

SENSITIZE ME

CRITICIZE ME

CIVILIZE ME

COMPENSATE ME

ANIMATE ME

COMPLICATE ME

ELEVATE ME

Tied in 1st with:

The Spray that's torn away,

Is an image of the way I feel...

The lyric that keeps sticking with me

No one get to their heaven without a fight

"It's true that love can change us

Never quite enough

Sometimes we're too tender

Sometimes we're too tough"

"And if love remains

though everything is lost

We will pay the price

but we will not count the cost"

For someone who supposedly rarely wrote love songs, Neil had some of the most profound observations on the subject I've ever heard in a song, or in life. Isn't that ironic?
