Jump

I'll wait (my personal favorite DLR vocal)

Another I'll Wait lover!!!

All of the songs you mentioned are good.

As for DLR and his voice, I think his best vocals are on the debut album. Many here say he can't sing, but I think he can.

Just wanted to add that the little intro to Jump - 1984 - is, to me, beautiful. Eddie is exceedingly talented.

He is aces on keyboards.

The opening of And the Cradle Will Rock is actually a Wurlitzer, not a frankenstrat.

This song epitomizes Van Halen's appeal to me - those chords man - that feeling of longing that runs deep through their early catalog. And thatlocked live groove Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony had on those early recordings.

that all got so lost...

I love that song.

The originals on Diver Down are incredible. Diver Down is at the bottom of the first 6 for me ONLY because I think 4 covers (5 with Happy Trails) and 2 intros (Intruder and Little Guitars) is too many.

The first VH keybord hit. He plays it throughout, btw.

To be sure, I love most of the songs from the first six albums, and some from the Hagar era. You have good yet simple songs like "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" and "DOA," and then there are the ones where Eddie was in a different zone when he wrote them. A zone where his sense of timing and syncopation were almost proggy. Those top the list for me.

Recorded on the first take, reportedly.

:notworthy:

I love OU812. I've heard it called the Hagar era's Fair Warning, kind of "dark." I don't really get that vibe, but the album works for me.

O really?

I prefer "OI81LASTNITE"

"Finish What Ya Started" is one of the worst songs ever made. Lot's of shite on that album. Some good stuff too.

Sam Halen or Van Hagar shit shouldn't even be on this thread. The Sammy keybored Eddie crap should have it's own thread.

Why not say "Fire In The Hole" is a top three song.

I love being a very EXTREME Forum Member on here. LOL!

I do like the guitar work on "The One I Want" from that release

3. "Outta Love Again"

5. "Romeo Delight"

My two honorable mentions right there.

is a lurching rhythmic clusterfu*k of a thing, but it's beautiful. A real good example of how Michael and Alex could lock in with Eddie's adventurous rhythm ideas. Alex's drumming on that track is really good.

Not to be a nudge, but did you ever weigh in on your favorite guitarist? :)

I did not. I have a different fave player every week, so I'll have to think about it some more.

I can hear a bit of Rush in this tune (check 1:15):

Always thought the same exact thing. Reaching down and finding his inner Alex Lifeson.
