Cinema Strangiato.....anything new?

Didn’t go tonight because early reviews casted this film as the highlight reel from the R40 Blu-ray. Was this really the case?

Reviews I’ve seen say there wasn’t anything new here except for a long ad for Geddy’s book.

There were a few previously unseen clips, eg. A soundcheck jam of Jacob's Ladder, Losing It featuring Jonny Dinklage and....the SNIDER! :o

Thanks.....so that's it for $15? Sad how far the Rush fan base has fallen that we get so excited for a rehashed product that most of us already have. Hard to believe that just a decade ago, we still had three tours ahead of us....

Yeah, with no tours in the future, this is what it's come to. They've suggested this may become "annual" - theater events once a year, in lieu of tours. During audience participation songs (the clapping during Spirit of Radio, "heys" during 2112 Overture), my theater participated like they would've at the live concert. Is that kind of cool, kind of pathetic, or a bit of both? What if I confess that I started it? ;)

It wasn't exactly a highlight reel of the R40 DVD, but sort of. Some of the shots were different, and some of the songs were from a different performance. It wasn't anything terribly exciting in terms of content, but personally, I really got a kick out of just being in a public space with a bunch of Rush people enjoying some big-screen Rush footage, and reminiscing with random strangers after about what a great experience it was to see Rush live and commiserating regarding missing them. Worth the $11.55 I paid for the ticket.

Agreed! Without future albums and tours, who could ask for anything more than this?

Pretty much true. Which is enough for me as a TrueRushFan™ not some fly by night laz-about. I support the band.

Forget tours as it used to be this "film" reminded me Geddy can't sing no more.

Good for you. But given that the band sold the rights to their recorded output to Ole years ago, I'm going to bet that the band didn't see a dime from this particular film.

He can't! That's why I find it ironic that HE'S the one who actually wanted to keep touring! His voice is a better reason to retire than anything else.

This movie was essentially my 16-year-old's "first Rush concert." Hearing Geddy singing like that, she must've been thinking "THIS is the band my father's been raving about?"

If they ever tour again bring a vocalist to share duties with Geddy. He can do the late recording stuff and yodel or howl through some old stuff but let a vocalist like Amiee Mann handle the bulk.

Bonzie! :o :hi: :Neil:

I'm with you on all of this! Geddy's voice is adequate to good on most of R40. Except for Lakeside Park, that even I as a staunch defender of Geddy's voice have to admit he should have stayed away from. After seeing the film I was thinking that I wish they had represented Caress Of Steel with some arrangement of In The Valley/The Fountain, from Lamneth. I think Geddy could have sung that well, and the fans would have gone crazy.

I hope you're well. I so miss those listening parties we used to have in chat!

So what would next year's film be? "CS 2 - The OTHER songs from R40"? :P Maybe they'll start screening some older footage. Seeing a double feature of ESL/GUPL on the big screen with concert level sound would be cool! Edited by TexMike

Despite owning the R40 blu-ray and all the other videos containing the truly hilarious intermission clips they mashed together, I still thoroughly enjoyed this! The new interviews were quite good and with more substance. and the side stories were interesting. Mostly, though, it was a testament to the enormous amount of footage that was captured at the time of the R40 tour. As a result, there were not just different angles, but a whole different look much of the time, not to mention the hilarious soundcheck footage, as well as the artistic superimposing of image and sound while keeping a cohesive narrative!!

It's also worth mentioning that my wife, who is not a Rush fan per se, quite enjoyed it. Interesting to see what they have in store for us next year...

Though I know it's a pipe dream, my hope was that "See you next year" was a teaser for some work they might do... Ie, recording 1 or 2 new tracks. Won't happen of course, but it was a nice thought to have for 3 or 4 minutes.

To be completely cynical - Ole will probably throw another "event" to peddle the new tour book. My guess is a companion doc that highlights the tour-book. Interviews with old friends etc...

They will flog the horse's corpse for as long as they can.

Yes, this!

He sounded AMAZING last night, from all the different performances. Clear, strong, on point.

So damn tired of the "Geddy can't sing anymore" narrative. Give it up, people. You're flat out wrong.

I certainly thought the singing was perfectly acceptable, save for the Clockwork Angels songs which really needed to be subtitled. Those are tough tunes to nail right at the start of a gig though.
