The Ever So Slight Backhanded Slap... and Sometimes More

This is funny. The general attitude of the long-timers is yeah, nothing we haven’t heard before...while some will undoubtedly get into it and explain and explain and explain, all over and over again. But in the end, I don’t think anyone’s minds will be changed.

Let the circle jerk continue. The faster we go, the rounder we get...

And in the end, does it even matter?

Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile...

(hey, if you think being a Rush fan is hard in this regard, try being a Yes-diehard.....)

Isn't the other Yes (ARW) supposed to be half-ways decent?

I just read ARW are touring again soon. And yes they are massively more listenable than this mess.

UGH I feel so bad typing that. Alan White is f***ing brilliant, and a GREAT musician. He's just in bad shape physically. He's a legend and he saved Yes after Bruford left.

Puts me in a super awkward position... 2 of the guys in the Howe-version of Yes are friends of mine.... they're not the issue...

That's cool and awkward at the same time.

Here's a rare pic of Steve Howe being happy:

http://freedomandprosperity.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/bernanke-whoville.jpg

I watched some of ARW at the Apollo and the difference is immediate: more energy, more interplay, non-droopy tempos (er, tempi?).

Steve Howe's Spinal Tap moment:

"Turn that spotlight off!"

[Light gets turned off]

"I can't see! Grrrr!"

I think Ged's voice was just fine at the last two shows I saw, but that was in context of the live experience. I haven't heard the S&A Live, Time Machine, Clockwork or R40 Live cds/vids, and don't care to.

:Alex: :Neil: :geddy:

I saw the R40 show and loved it. I listened to the CD once. I doubt I ever will again.

I feel this way about the R40 tour, Time Machine Tour, and Clockwork Angels tours. LOVED the shows. Maybe listened to the live CDs/DVDs once.

Well, I for one thought Ged sang very well on the last tour. He surprised me with how well he managed many of the songs, both old and new. But Closer To The Heart was tough...he really couldn't quite get that one anymore. His voice was definitely in decline...and Alex flubbed a note in his solo at my show (not that I cared, but I happen to remember it because it was rather obvious). They were never perfect live, but they weren't at the top of their live game when they went out. Much as I wish they could've made one more album, I agree with Neil that it was time to stop touring.

Only ever had a problem vocally with the second set of the last tour. Before that I think he still brought it. On the last tour the problem became hitting their standard as band which didn't happen nearly as often as it did previously.

It's funny you haven't listened to those live discs because I hardly ever listen to the studio albums -- it's mostly the live stuff. I can't remember the last time I played CA or S&A on their own.

That's what makes listening to Rush so special, isn't it? We all find our favorite mode.

I do remember, though, that Geddy's voice sounded fine -- the benefits of the multiple takes and mixing board. Maybe I'll play them again tomorrow; I'd hear some songs I haven't in years because they didn't get played live!

I've almost always reached for the live discs over studio (Listening to Rush In Rio now actually which I almost never do on CD (Doesn't sound as horrible as I remember it although I always prefer the DVD from this show)
