79. Neal Morse - Sola Scriptura

A concept album about the life of Martin Luther, Neal Morse's penchant for Christian Prog takes an almost historical bent with this album. Featuring just four tracks, the album clocks in at over 75 minutes; weaving between the rhythmic and the heavy, between the widdly complexities of hardcore prog and the melodic harmonies of something like gospel. It's a great listen from cover to cover, featuring incredible drumming from Mike Portnoy, and a few amazing guitar solos from Paul Gilbert. It's instrumentally strong throughout, and shouldn't be overlooked as a prog great.

I don’t think a band has to make only primarily 6+ minute epics to be considered progressive.

Complexity of arrangement, variety of instruments, lyrical structure and content all contribute to the progressive sensibility, I think.

If Queen is allowed to be on this then I'm going to put some Sabbath and Maiden on it.

Initially termed "progressive pop", the style was an outgrowth of psychedelic bands who abandoned standard pop traditions in favour of instrumentation and compositional techniques more frequently associated with jazz, folk, or classical music. Additional elements contributed to its "progressive" label: lyrics were more poetic, technology was harnessed for new sounds, music approached the condition of "art" and the studio, rather than the stage, became the focus of musical activity, which often involved creating music for listening, not dancing.

:)

And...

Prog is based on fusions of styles, approaches and genres, involving a continuous move between formalism and eclecticism. Due to its historical reception, prog's scope is sometimes limited to a stereotype of long solos, overlong albums, fantasy lyrics, grandiose stage sets and costumes, and an obsessive dedication to technical skill.

Iron Maiden is Heavy f***ing Metal with some prog tendencies. Gosh, it's obvious they aren't full on bloody prog-anything. They aren't Dream Theater.

I will be honest, they don't strike me as that complicated or complex. I regard them as easy listening metal music. I got more depth and range in sound and style from Rush, Savatage and Judas Priest (I've not heard many albums and they all offered a lot of variety). Maiden are GREAT but they don't fit the progressive label for me. Hey essentially release the same style every time, with little to no variation. The only differences are song quality.

Maiden are great but hardly adventurous. I just find all this talk about them being prog because of long songs a little redundant. They have touches of prog, but they are not really all that complicated.

Wow, even though I'm not a musician, I can hear that Maiden has always done what sounds like complex stuff musically. I thought that was obvious to most fans. If my non musical ear can hear then I figured any good music fan could as well.

You don't see them as prong from Brave New World through today? I sure do. The song length and musical complexity I think has gotten much greater for them since Bruce returned. Maybe BNW isn't full on prog but I got no problem calling it that. The albums after that are definitely prog.

I am going to explore Maiden deeply this year. But it will be slow, album by album, as I collect all of the 2015 rereleases. I want to soak it all in slowly. I've been playing the first four a lot, and I am finding all of them to be so wonderfully amazing in the way they get better and better with replays. Especially Number, which until recently had never grown on me.

IMO Megadeth have much more right to be labeled prog than Maiden....their arrangements and melodies are much more musically complex and elaborate and the musicianship rivals Dream Theatre (without the wankiness)

I disagree that they have more of a right, but Deth are very prog as well. It's basically prog with a thrash veneer.

Agreed. That stood out to me immediately when I delved into them last year.

Want 80s prog metal? Mekong Delta, from Germany. Iron Maiden? Intricate arrangements but not prog. And that's not an insult.
