Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 So I continue my marathon with the final album of the second stage. Honestly have no expectations. This is a live album, cool setlist, and to be honest absolutely no hype. Is this a good one? Will I enjoy it? Live albums are very hit or miss for me, with All The World's A Stage proving to be a major hit. But I will just enjoy this for what it is, and leave my thoughts below. 1
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 1. Spirit Of Radio Well this sounds great live! Note please that I have never seen Rush live, and have watched very little of their live performances (I only own the Rio DVD and...I barely watched it). So for me this is quite enjoyable. They are TIGHT! It sounds a lot like the album version, and it feels very polished. Which isn't bad but it doesn't quite have the impact that Bastille Day did. But what a fine start! Are their any videos from this era? Please share any! 8/10 A fine start but it's not blowing my mind with excitement just yet...
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 2. Red Barchetta Its amazing to note still how tight they are live but it just sounds like a studio recording... ...that is good...I guess? This is so polished! 7/10 1
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 This album makes me wish I could just go back in time and be at a Rush gif myself. How can three people sound like an orchestra?
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 Am I the only one who thinks this is too close in sound to a studio recording?
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 3. YYZ The precision is sublime. Wow. But unlike ATWAS I still don't feel excited. Bloody hell they set the bar high with that one! Great performance, still don't feel like I am listening to anything essential.
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 YYZ gets: 9/10 for Neil. Still too shiny
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 YYZ gets: 9/10 for Neil. Still too shiny My mistake. Went on for so long I raised a family and saw the kids off to college. 8/10 2
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 I really should let songs finish before I rate them...
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 (edited) 4. A Passage To Bangkok This sounds tired...I mean...I am bored lol... 6/10 These ratings are strictly for these live versions as presented on the album. Not massively impressed with this album so far. The production really robs these songs of weight. Passage should sound way more ballsy than this, especially with killer solos (Alex...I will bear you a child, all you have to do is ask). Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 Oh gosh I am not even halfway... Well it's passing some time.
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 5. Closer To The Heart Love a crowd sing a long! I love this song. This sounds cute...like a little sing-a-long round the campfire. Only with electricity. Well this was a fine recording. I could genuinely tell it's live and it's a little more authentic sounding. 8/10 If I was not paying close attention I'd think this was just another compilation of studio recordings. That's not a bad thing but...It's also not All The World's A Stage. Rush slay live though. Again, any live videos or bootlegs on the YouTube's are more than welcome!
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 6. Beneath, Between And Behind Yeah. Great little song. Sounds like the album. Yada yada yada... Bored. 6/10 This isn't a bad album, just a boring one.
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 7. Jacob's Ladder ONE OF MY FAVOURITE RUSH SONGS! That intro...is this a Sting song? I dig. I mean yeah it's great and all but where is the FIYAH! Just a great band playing a great song live in a really great manner. But the shiny shiny...the album version has more energy. Oh boy...I am going to have to hunt down some of these bootlegs I've heard you guys talk about. Because the post-production here is lifeless. 6/10
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 Is this anyone's favourite live album?
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 8. Broon's Bane Pretty. Ok well This will get added to my Rush playlist at least. 8/10
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 9. The Trees Yeah...same old moans. 6/10
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 10. Xanadu This is such a great song, it could never be a Xandon't. I feel rewarded for my patience. Album highlight thus far. 10/10 2
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 Xanadu is a real triumph live. Wow...THIS IS A TRIO?! 1
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 Three songs left. Kinda relieved...
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 (edited) 11. Freewill I mean it's fine but I could still just stick Permanent Waves on. 6/10 Edited November 10, 2018 by Segue Myles
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 (edited) 12. Tom Sawyer Sounds electrifying. Bet this was a bop that night. It's hard to tell because IT IS SO FUCKONG POLISHED!! 6/10 Edited November 10, 2018 by Segue Myles
Segue Myles Posted November 10, 2018 Author Posted November 10, 2018 13. La Villa Strangiato 10/10 performance. But this is a live album. Where was the life?! 6/10
