Song by Song Trifecta Battle: Rush vs Fly By Night vs Signals

Going with a variation of the enjoyable song by song battle threads.

Why these three albums? ——> because I don’t think I’ve seen them yet fight + they’ve all got 8 tracks so they line up conveniently.

Will the debut take the win? Will the Snow Dog be victorious? Will the dalmatian?

Finding My Way vs. Anthem vs. Subdivisions

Need Some Love vs. Best I Can vs. Analog Kid

Take a Friend vs. Beneath, Between, & Behind vs. Chemistry

Here Again vs. By-Tor & the Snow Dog vs. Digital Man

What You’re Doing vs. Fly By Night vs. The Weapon

In The Mood vs. Making Memories vs. New World Man

Before and After vs. Rivendell vs. Losing It

Working Man vs. In the End vs. Countdown

Have at it.

Subdivisions...not as easy a pick as I thought. Anthem could’ve won.

Analog Kid...burns the other two tracks.

BB&B...easy win for the owl album.

By-Tor...too much meat for Here Again & Digital Man to compete with.

Fly By Night...probably picking this more for sentimental reasons than musicianship or anything else but it does take the win.

New World Man...catchier than the other two. As simple as that.

Losing It...almost picked Before & After but the thoughtfulness behind Losing It made me go that way.

Working Man...just a bruiser of a final track. The other two put up a fight but this one was guaranteed.

Rush: 1

Fly By Night: 3

Signals: 4

Subdivisions - Good as the other two are, this track is stellar.

Analog Kid - Run surprisingly close by Best I Can

BB&B - fairly easy win here for this cautionary take on American history

Here Again - If this was the ATWAS version of By-Tor it would win, but this blues based slice of killer just does it on an emotional level.

The Weapon - Chilling lyrics which are just as relevant today.

Making Memories - Upbeat, bouncy and a nice bit of slide from Lerxt at the end.

Losing It - very closely run by Before and After, but lyrics edge it.

In the End - I'll probably be in the minority for this, but the emotion in Geds voice wins this for me.

Rush - 1

FBN - 3

Signals - 4

Nice one, JB! This is trifecund.

The ones I enjoy the most at this point in my life:

Anthem

Need Some Love

Beneath, Between, & Behind

Here Again

What You’re Doing > Fly By Night (by an owl feather)

In The Mood > Making Memories (love that slide solo though)

Before and After

Working Man = In the End (flip a coin)

Gotta go with the rawk. :haz:

Suck it, Signals! :P

Great idea, JB ! I'm a little biased as FBN is the album that got me into Rush, and while I appreciate it, I don't have an absolute devotion to Signals.

Anthem- I love this song as an example of "heavier" Rush.

Oooh, this second one is probably the hardest as I love Finding My Way and Need Some Love as straight forward rock songs, but I have to go with The Analog Kid- such a perfect song, lyrically and melody wise.

BBB, easily.

By-Tor and the Snow Dog

Fly By Night   It's the first Rush song I fell in love with.

Making Memories- I like the acoustic sound of it.

Before and After

In The End barely edges out Working Man.

Way to steal my thunder, man! :tsk:

I was working up to doing some battles with these albums, but I wanted to space it out a little so we can enjoy the battles for a bit longer. Either way, I like this game so:

Finding My Way | Anthem < Subdivisions

Need Some Love | Best I Can < Analog Kid

Take a Friend < Beneath, Between, & Behind > Chemistry

Here Again < By-Tor & the Snow Dog Digital Man

What You’re Doing < Fly By Night < The Weapon

In The Mood | Making Memories < New World Man

Before and After | Rivendell < Losing It

Working Man > In the End | Countdown

It really is not a contest when any 70s RUSH album goes against anything from the 80s onward so this result was never in doubt. 1 for Rush, 2 for Fly By Night, and 5 for the win for Signals. It wasn't even that close, because Digital Man vs. By-Tor & The Snow Dog was a toss up for me. Convenient that the only song I really love from the first album goes up against one of the two I do not like on Signals so it doesn't go scoreless.

S, A, F

A, B, N

B, T, C

B, H, D

We, WYD, F

MM, I, N

L, R, B

W, I, C

Debut 1, FBN 3, S 4, yet overall I like FBN the best of the three albums.

Ahh...a 3 way dance. Let's see...

Subdivisions over Anthem and Finding My Way. Don't feel great about it, but SD is a top 12 or so song.

Analog Kid easy.

Beneath Between Behind Chemistry is close.

Digital Man I'm a Signals guy when all said and done.

The Weapon Strong battle though.

Making Memories I'm still fairly high on NWM.

Losing It Thanks to R40

3 great songs, man, but come on...Working Man!

Glad to see someone loves the debut as much as I do. :haz:

My picks are...

Subdivisions > Finding My Way > Anthem

Need Some Love > Analog Kid > Best I Can

Take A Friend > Beneath Behind Between > Chemistry

ByTor and the Snow Dog > Digital man > Here Again (very close, though, for all three)

What You're Doing > Fly By Night > The Weapon

New World Man > Making Memories > In The Mood (first two are very close)

Before and After > Losing It > Rivendell (just too much metal for a even very thought-provoking Signals effort to top)

Working Man > In The End > Countdown (Over-played but classic tops a sentimental fav and a wonderful middle sandwiched between plain white bread)

Debut: 5

Fly By Night: 1

Signals: 2

I have been really enjoying these, and this take is another great one.

Finding My Way < Anthem < Subdivisions Lyrically superior, although I give the edge to Anthem musically. But easy Sub win anyway.

Need Some Love < Best I Can < Analog Kid No contest- Analog destroys those two mediocre efforts.

Take a Friend < Beneath, Between, & Behind > Chemistry No contest again, although I sort of dig Take a Friend.

Here Again < By-Tor & the Snow Dog > Digital Man No Contest, but I genuinely like the other songs. By Tor just shreds though.

What You’re Doing < Fly By Night < The Weapon No contest again, Fly is good but The Weapon is great.

In The Mood = Making Memories < New World Man Again no contest. New is more fun and the others aren't that good.

Before and After > Rivendell < Losing It Rivendell is about LOTR so my inner nerd wants to like it, but zzz. Losing it is pretty cool.

Working Man < In the End < Countdown A contest between all three contenders! I love all three, but my inner nerd wins.

Signals 6

Fly By Night 2

Rush 0. By far their worst album, although Working Man almost pulled off an upset.

No surprise that Signals wins handily here, but I was surprised that every winner but the last wasn't even a contest. Even the two tracks FBN won were won with ease. The first album, had that remained their style, would mean Rush would be just another band to me. Decent, but not important. Working Man is great, though, and I wouldn't hate them. But every other Rush album is several times better.

My song vs song vs song score was debut 1 - FBN 3 - Sigs 4.

But using your point scale it’s 14 - 17 -17. It’s a much more telling score and shows (yet again) how important the specific matchups are.
