Song By Song Battle: Counterparts vs. Test For Echo

This thread has been a lot kinder than I expected. Thanks to everyone for being cool.

Time to break the pattern! If you think "Dog Years" is better than any other Rush song, you are insane, man/woman! At least The Speed of Love has some poetic lyrics: "One night we are bathed in light, one day carried away in storms". Pretty accurate description of love...at least from what your fellow Earthlings have told me.

I used to like T4E a lot but last time I tried it I hated it. Counterparts is easily a great album, but for all its strengths I like Roll The Bones and Presto more. But saying that, Cold Fire and Everyday Glory are top ten Rush songs for me.

T4E is a lame attempt to continue going Alt. Rock. Which they already did well on CP. so the record comes off a bit pointless.

but yea Presto beats both these.

Mick

I just listened to Presto all the way thru and even though Superconductor and Scars are substandard the entire album really hangs together f***ing well. Its got such a vibe about it. I cant really explain.

Counterparts automatically loses for having the cringemaking, buttock-clenchingly embarrassing Nobody's Hero.

I knew you were different in your musicality.

:laughing guy:

I still enjoy that song though.

Mick

Once you get past that initial verse, the song shines, IMO.

(And it's the clumsy phrasing, not the content, for the record)

Lerxsts solo is just beautiful and I can tell that despite the clunkiness of the verse Ged really believes in the message behind it all. This is Rush at its idiosyncratic best.

Everyday Glory is f***ing totally f***ing completely f***ing stupid and awful. Are you are really listening to this song?

What a POS song. You guys cut down Dog Years and Hero and you praise this song? What is wrong with you all?

I find it uplifting. :)

If Digital Dad is looking dark, we're the ones who have to shine!

Though we know that time has wings, we're the ones who have to fly. Nothing...and I mean nothing...on TFE comes close to touching the lyrics from Counterparts. For God's sake, man, Echo came close to turning Rush into a parody of themselves! We should all be thankful our favorite band survived that sonic abortion!

Everyday Glory is the best song on Counterparts. One of my very favorite Rush songs. To each his own.

Dog Years is bad but it isn't close to the bottom ten.

Animate > TFE

Stick It Out < Driven

Cut to the Chase = Half the World

Nobody's Hero = TCOR

BS&M = TAM

Alien Shore= Totem

TSOL > Dog Years

Double Agent = Virtuality

Leave That Thing Alone = Resist

Cold Fire > Limbo

Everyday Glory < CATS

Final Score: Counterparts 3, TFE 2, 6 draws

Interesting that I really like Tracks 6 and 9 on both albums, and not a fan of 3, 4, 5 on each. Carve Away the Stone, one of my top underrated Rush tracks, edged out Everyday Glory, which I also like.

Interesting exercise, although very random (track order) when evaluating a comparison of the albums.

Counterparts in the obvious blowout:

Animate >> Test For Echo

Stick It Out < Driven

Cut To The Chase >>Half The World

Nobody's Hero > The Color Of Right

Between Sun & Moon >>Time And Motion

Alien Shore > Totem

The Speed Of Love and Dog Years - dog vs. dog, so neither

Double Agent > Virtuality

Leave That Thing Alone >> Resist

Cold Fire > Limbo

Everyday Glory > Carve Away The Stone

Counterparts is far and away the best Rush album of the 90's.

Buy it digitally. No lifting required, you can just delete it.

Animate > Test For Echo

Stick It Out < Driven I HATE Stick It Out. Driven is the best track on Test. There could not have been a bigger win margin.

Cut To The Chase > Half The World

Nobody's Hero > The Color Of Right

Between Sun & Moon > Time And Motion

Alien Shore > Totem

The Speed of Love < Dog Years Close. Dog Years has a very lucky draw here. For a bad song, it found some seriously boring competition.

Double Agent > Virtuality

Leave That Thing Alone > Resist

Cold Fire < Limbo

Everyday Glory < Carve Away The Stone Sue me. Carve is a great song. Glory is just nice.

7-4 for Counterparts. I can accept that. I don't hate Test the way some here do. But Counter is still much better.
