Texas King
I'm going with Vapor Trails. I found a lot of atmospheric moments on it. What you say?
goose
Interesting question. They all seem to have their own vibe, but ones that stand out for me include Caress of Steel, 2112, Hemispheres, Moving Pictures, Signals, GUP, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, Presto, Counterparts, Vapor Trails, Snakes and Arrows... So, yeah, pretty much every album stands out, vibe-wise.
treeduck
Yeah they all have their own vibe, you could say that for any album really. I'll have to think which one has the best atmosphere or vibe. I might put my top 5 Rush album vibes in here later.

theredtamasrule
I'm going with Vapor Trails. I found a lot of atmospheric moments on it. What you say? Agree. Due to several factors: all the vocal & guitar layering, the distorted mix & the coated heads Peart used for his drums...all these added up to make what I consider Rush’s “impressionist” album.

Yes, the drums would’ve sounded so much better with pinstripes. :PThe drums sound more focused on the remix. They should have used the tried and true Terry Brown method of recording the drums on VT (ie: a nice big sound with a bit of the room in it, as on MP). As Peart’s playing was more open and basic, the drum mix should have been sympathetic to that as opposed to trying to make it angular and edgy and busy sounding. My two Canadian cents anyway. thirteen
According to Alex the recording of Caress of Steel was very 'atmospheric'. :smoke:

grasbo
GUP and Power Windows but there is a lot of reverb and delay on those albums. Also one is dark and the othe btight sounding. But overall i would say MP the most complete ,cohesive album once the Camera Eye sinks in(it took me a little while from memory). Alien Girl
I don't think most here understand what 'atmospheric' means. Roughly speaking...to create or evoke a distinctive mood, vibe or emotion. I picked GUP because to me the distinctive sound of the synth winds through the whole album. One can listen to the briefest of clips and immediately (at least to me) identify it as something off that album. No other Rush album has that same sound. It also in my opinion, has a certain otherwordly, off-planet, futuristic feel that definitely puts it into the atmospheric category. Someone in the synth thread said it has a dark 'pressurized' theme running through it...I'd agree w/ that. I don't know...I'm not feeling particularly eloquent this evening to state it any better. Red3angel
I’m changing my answer I said angels originally. While I agree that grace under pressure definitely has atmosphere vibe, I believe it also is very stylistic which can be confused with atmosphere. So my new answer is actually vapor trails
