RUSHHEAD666
Just to follow that up, other bands who used to be the heaviest band in the world, like Sabbath and Priest, never relied on heaviness itself, they always valued good songs first. There is no doubt about it. I need melody in my METAL! That's why I love OPETH and yet hate growl death metal. I love Opeth because their music was dark and heavy with MELODY! I know they are Opeth Lite now but hell I love the way they went. Blame Steven Wilson.
treeduck
The thing about Slayer is in 1986 they were the heaviest metal band in the world, now they're not even in the top 100! Excellent point Pat. I would rather listen to DEATH ANGEL! FUCKK SLAYER! SLAMERI'm like you Earl with this band, I have Reign in Blood and South of Heaven and that's it. I like these albums but I never delved further. I prefer them to Metallica but I like almost every thrash band better than Slayer.

Stormtron
I like Slayer and their no bullshit approach, but I can get everything I need from them in three albums...Hell Awaits, Reign in Blood, and Seasons in the Abyss. Really, I'll just throw on Reign once every few years and I'm good on Slayer for a while. Tour lineup is sick though, should be good.

Oracle
Out of the Big Four bands to announce retirement, the one I least expected to go first was Slayer. They are just godly performers, though I've never enjoyed their particular variety of thrash. I much prefer Anthrax, Megadeth, and 80s Metallica. Gotta give these guys their props though, they spearheaded a lot in the metal world. I wouldn't be surprised if they take the show to Europe and maybe another string of North American dates before calling it quits.
