The plot to this mess was totally unfucking believable: we're to accept the fact that OTHER bad guy space ships (One Republic or The New Order or Fallout Vader, whatever the hell they're called) couldn't jump in front of the rebels and finish them off? Really? The entire plot was laughably contrived and much of what followed was equally as foolish and boring.

The whole casino trip was DUMB, oh and they just happen to run into a super thief/codebreaker in jail...right. None of that had to happen if the ultimate end game they had in mind was the fight scenes on Snoke's ship. None of that wasted time was necessary nor was it very interesting.

Why exactly is Kylo Ren evil? Why? His character makes zero sense. Perhaps the thing between he and Luke was a more formative experience but did they elaborate on it? Hell no. It's all vague and up to second guessing. There has to be a Vader stand in so I guess he'll do. Did Han beat him as a child or get drunk and slap Leia around? I suspect we'll never know exactly why he's the bad guy.

Rey...apparently she's a Jedi Master now even after telling Luke, all teary eyed, that she's afraid of what's inside of her. Guess 3 quick lessons is all it takes to become a powerful Master. Dumb. But hey, she had to get on that ship and fight Ren by the end of the movie and set up the next film so why not. Yawn.

Leia...holy balls! Who needs Luke Skywalker when the Princess can go all Force Mary Poppins and fly through space like that. The worst part of that is that we've NEVER seen any indication that she has that kind of control with the Force. We were always told she had it but she's never displayed it like that before. Plus it was kinda comical and not in the goofy, predictable, groan inducing comical way the rest of the move tried to be.

Snoke...just who the hell is this guy? Where did he come from? How did he get to become leader of One Republic? Doesn't matter now I guess. Oh well.

There were a few good parts like Laura Dern's sacrifice which was pretty cool, Luke's mind f**k on everyone at the end...though I was hoping for an epic light saber duel between he and Ren.

I did not like this movie at all. Bloated, entirely too long, too many characters doing mostly boring, nonsensical and stupid things to fit the plot. It could be that I'm expecting too much from a silly Star Wars movie or it could be that these movies are the same but I'm 47 now rather than 7 or 10 or 13. Probably a mixture of the two.

I agree with a lot of this: Leia Poppins, Laura Dern sacrifice scene, the whole casino bit, Snoke’s non-story, Kylo Ren’s stuff, and probably something else I’m forgetting.

BUT I just didn’t dislike as much as you I guess. For me, there were a bunch of “meh” parts BUT I didn’t dislike those parts THAT much.

Yoda’s scenes & lines, Luke’s final bits, + Dern’s sacrifice scene were high quality and bring this movie up to the B- grade I gave it.

B-

Better than only Episode 1 and 2.

Underwhelmed big time and I had zero expectations.

Going to see it again this week (with my son this time).

The Force Awakens was such a great return to form.....then the awesome sauce of Rogue One......this just fell so flat for me. Just disjointed and full of holes. Some great set pieces and scenes no doubt. But on a whole? 7th best Star Wars film in the series for me. Could move to 6th with some repeated viewings. But no way will it ever crack the top 5.

Looking at the current 19 votes, 4 people thought Last Jedi wasn’t better than Clones?! 2 thought it wasn’t better than Phantom?!!

Holy smokes!

I thought Last Jedi had some issues but it wasn’t Clones or Phantom bad.

:P

I agree with that. But that’s all it is better than.

I think I posted earlier that I had it better than all of the prequels but that’s it. Sith was the least shitty of the prequels but I still didn’t like it.

I did grade Last Jedi a B- like you did though.

I was almost right about those li'l penguin-looking things being Chewie snacks. The thing that would have taken the movie from A to A+ would have been Chewie taking a big bite out of that delicious looking roast bird. Thought the movie was nothing but coolness and fun. Edited by toymaker

hm... my ranking after seeing it twice:

4, 7, 5, 8, R1, 6, 3, 1, 2

I recently saw 3 again...and it wasn't as satisfyingly dark and dramatic as I remembered, so 6 now beats it out, but it's still miles ahead of 2 and decently better than 1.

Now that they've been taken off their native planet, they're gonna be fruitful and multiply all across the galaxy. Twice as bad as Tribbles.....

Best to worst - 5, 4, 7, 6, 8, 3.9, 3, 2, 1

Great ranking. I am slightly different in having 3.9 ahead of 8 and 7 and 3 ahead of 8.

I am watching R1 again tonight. I watched The Force Awakens last night and had a big smile on my face. That was a great Star Wars movie.

I also watched Return of The Jedi again (and by the way I watch the original cuts on the lousy DVD transfer ones from 2004 I think? In 4:3 Letterbox) I can't stand those Special Editions Lucas did before Episode 1 was released. Ugh...hate all that CGI nonsense he added in.

Current rankings and the top 5 are solid and in stone now.

Empire Strikes Back

A New Hope

Return Of The Jedi

Rogue One

The Force Awakens

Revenge Of The Sith

The Last Jedi

The Phantom Menace

Attack Of The Clones

Right after watching this, one of my friends suggested that the master code breaker on that casino planet recommended by Maz Kanata should’ve been Lando “Billy Dee” Calrissian instead of the stock gambling looking guy we saw. Lando would’ve fit in perfectly as that kind of player/character AND known & recommended by Maz. They could’ve still used Benicio Del Toro’s character as is but JUST have Lando in that very brief gambling scene where Finn and Rose see the master code breaker - an old Billy Dee Lando laughing, gambling, and enjoying himself.

Hell, I would’ve been really good with NOT having Del Toro in there at all and bringing back Lando Calrissian as the master code breaker who helps them (minus the Del Toro character screwing over Finn & Rose bit). That could’ve been the way to bring back Billy Dee’s Lando into this trilogy. Besides, with the Han Solo prequel coming up it wouldn’t have hurt if Lando (even an old Lando) were in Last Jedi.

I thought the whole code breaker sequence was confusing and didn't lend much to the story. It could have but I think it was a missed opportunity. I really like the idea of involving Lando.

Also, the idea of a James Bond style character might be interesting which makes me wonder if they're going to bring the guy in the casino back in episode 9. Maz really talked him up and it seems to me to be a huge waste of character development if they don't.

you talk about funny reactions.......oh my god. the bitch fits people threw over the progs before even seeing the films :laughing guy: :laughing guy: :laughing guy:

And the Porgs turned out to be totally harmless. Didn't tarnish the film at all. They were just the newest in a long line of strange and goofy creatures that every Star Wars film contains. It's tradition.

Also, why didn't they tell Poe about their plans to take the shuttles to the abandoned base? It would have avoided a mutiny along with the wild goose chase looking for the codebreaker which ended up causing the plan to fail.

They weren't telling other Captains/Commanders, only the people on the bridge knew about it. To tell Poe would be to give him some kind of special treatment, which he didn't deserve after inadvertently causing such heavy losses on the bomber run mission. I think Holdo knew that Leia needed Poe to be taught a lesson about leadership and following orders and doing what's best for the team.

All the same, I want more of them. That scene of the Porg jumping on the dashboard of the falcon and screaming while Chewy is flying will never, ever, get old.

I'll have a firm ranking after i see it again tonight

Yeah, it took me a while to decide. Overall, I concluded this is an incredible movie that I will always love, but I don't think it did enough to get me as personally attached to it as I am 4, 7, and 5.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but why would Luke, knowing that Ben is Han and Leia's son, want to eliminate him because he senses so much darkness in him? And where did Ben's darkness come from? Is it just how it is with the Skywalker genes? It could go either way? He said he didn't hate his father in the movie, so I'm kinda wondering about this. Or am I missing something that I should've caught?

I have some questions. I came away from the movie loving most of it, but I seriously wonder how they're not going to fall into clichés with IX. I mean, it sets up for a Rey/Kylo thing, but there has to be something more to it because it's way too predictable if they go that route. So, it's up to you JJ.

Also, Yoda's appearance was wonderful. He had that playful personality that he had in the OT, which we haven't seen in a long time. At least, not in the movies. He was always super serious in the prequels, and in ROTJ he was dying, so his playful personality was most welcome.

The mystery of Ben's darkness is a serious question. I think our only hint was that somehow Snoke had been in contact with him during his Jedi training, as Luke said as much. Perhaps when they reveal more about Snoke's backstory, we'll get more of Kylo's rationale, and maybe even tidbits on Rey! (still holding out that she isn't just no one).
